Dog rescued 3 weeks after being washed out to sea by tsunami
Source: USA Today

By Michael Winter, USA TODAY

The Japanese coast guard today rescued a dog washed out to sea with a house by the tsunami from the March 11 earthquake, Reuters reports.

A coast guard helicopter was investigating an island of debris off Kesennuma, in northern Japan, when the dog was spotted on a house roof. Frightened by the rotors, the animal disappeared inside, evading efforts to save him.

A boat was sent after the helicopter ran low on fuel, and rescuers were able to catch the dog, who was described as "emaciated but alive."

14. My jack russell still suffers from PTSD
from her Katrina experience - dogs, like humans, do carry the scars from such experiences. I hope the dog gets a good home with lots of love.

15. He has probably also lost his family, so he will be grieving, too.
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 12:54 AM by tblue37
I am so concerned about my cats' emotional reactions to things that I won't even walk by the two more timid rescue kitties while they are eating, because they startle away from their food too easily. Instead I wait until they are finished, even if I really need to get something or do something in that area of the apartment!

Animals' feelings come first for me.

17. My dog was timid and scared of everything when we got her.
The shelter found her wandering the neighborhood.
But now, after years of care and love, she has a happy, outgoing personality.

She's 11 years old and just recently found how much fun it is to play with other dogs so at the dog park she romps around just like she's a puppy.

34. So was ours! We got Goldie from the local shelter and she was SOOOOO skinny!
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 06:42 PM by calimary
All emaciated, she'd just been pregnant and the pound had aborted the pups that day, I think, because the incision was still very fresh. She was still bleeding and lactating, her teats hanging way down. MISERABLE! Her head was hanging way down also - it took two days at home with us before she'd even lift up her head. Sorrowful eyes, legs all banged up, she'd had a rough life. Nobody knew how old she was but figured she couldn't be more than four or so. And she was afraid of everything as well as everyone. When we first brought her home, and around the side of the house to the back yard, she was really weak but she still tried awfully hard to crawl under the bushes to hide. We put a pad down on the ground in the back yard up against the house so she'd have a comfy place to lie down and rest and recover and get her bearings in her new home. As soon as we brought her inside a couple of hours later, she found a hiding place under my desk and just stayed there for several days before she gained the courage and the energy to get up and start walking around a little.

Really sad and neglected. That was three years ago. Today Goldie is a fat, sassy, happy dog, and her "puppies" are our four cats - all of whom are also rescues. She's really gentle with them all. We call our house the "peaceable kingdom" because all these critters get along together. And Goldie is happy. Lots of love, lots of food, lots of treats, lots of attention, and our son's band (ACIDIC) regards her as their mascot. She comes up to his room when the other bandmates are over here, and she hangs out with them for hours. And they play with her and give her treats - they have their own separate stash of dog treats up there - and even take her to the dog park sometimes.

Goldie has a much better life now! If I understood how to post a photo of her, I gladly would. (It's even been explained to me by patient souls around here and I still don't understand it.)

This dog rescue story makes me happy. So much glum news from Japan and elsewhere these days - this one is a real tonic for the morale. MUCH NEEDED for us ALL!!! I hope that dog gets a GREAT and LOVING home for the rest of its hopefully long life.

10. I know. You can almost see him/her trying to figure things out....
"Where are MY humans?"

"Should I trust these humans?"

"I'm so cold, scared and alone but I don't know these humans. I want to love any humans who love me right now but I want my humans...?"

It's just all such a tragedy. I see my own dogs' faces in all these stories... so glad this one was rescued.

47. There must have been a source of water, or he would be dead.
Maybe there was dog food inside the house too - 3 weeks is an awfully long time without food.

37. I saw the tape of the rescue
on TV as well. You could tell that lucky doggie was confused and more than a little frightened. He wasn't a happy, tail waggin', glad to see you dog. You could see him duck back into the pieces of the house floating in the giant island of things that were once something else. He was waiting for the face he knew and his rescuers weren't it. I'm glad to read he ate and is doing better.

39. I feel guilty for not having a rescue dog but my dog was actually
rescued from a family with 8 children who were not so loving. We have recently found a great program that should be duplicated in a lot of neighborhoods. I love dogs but know that many are abandoned as puppies because no one wants them. This program spays or neuters pets for free if you have an EBT card. One pet per household. I do not know who pays for it and maybe it is the vet but this is definitely better than dumping puppies or kitties somewhere.

46. What a wonderful story. Thank you.
I have 2 rescue dogs. We used to have 5 but three have died over the years and right now we aren't in a position to replace them. But this story made me tear up at my office computer. I am so grateful that the Coast Guard didn't give up and either leave Ban or shoot her.
