Fla. Legislature likely to curtail abortion rights

By BILL KACZOR
Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- With economic issues dominating Florida's political rhetoric, little was heard about abortion during the November election, but the results may profoundly affect abortion rights in the state.

At least 18 measures that would restrict abortions have been filed in the Legislature and sponsors are optimistic about their chances of passing because of the Republican sweep in Florida.

"Having a governor that's going to sign the bills is something that adds impetus to moving forward," Flores said.

The Florida legislation includes bills (HB 1127, SB 1744) virtually identical to a measure that Scott's predecessor, Charlie Crist, vetoed after it passed in the closing hours of last year's legislative session. It would have required pregnant women to view and listen to a description of a live ultrasound picture of their fetuses before getting an abortion.

3. Thus making a necessary abortion a scaring emotional incident that will haunt
them the rest of their life...instead of letting it fade into a distant unpleasant memory...and get on with a positive attitude on life.

6. Do It For Randolph, Scott
As Scott Randolph (D - Orlando) suggested, maybe every woman of child-bearing age should incorporate her uterus. If it is a business enterprise, Republican lawmakers would have no interest in regulating it.

of course, then Randolph (D - Totally Awesome) was admonished by house leadership (Republicans) for using such language on the House Floor. Apparently, uterus is now considered inappropriate.

7. That is brilliant
And so very true.

When will republicans realize that their classic distractions, abortion, gay marriage, and Islam-a-phobia, don't work when people are jobless, hungry, and homeless? Though their tactics are often effective, they lack imagination. Just because something worked before, they use it over and over and over again. Eventually even the most conservative of their base will often ask, "But how does that get me a job or pay the rent?"
