By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN – They sang songs like “Solidarity Forever” and “We Shall Overcome,” chanted “We are One,” and carried placards reading “Stop the War on Workers” and “Save the American Dream.”

An estimated 350 people rallied Monday evening on the steps of Nebraska State Capitol in support of retaining collective bargaining rights.

The rally, organized by the Nebraska State AFL-CIO, coincided with several across the country on the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of pro-labor civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

Speakers, which included Nebraska labor union leaders and an Omaha Catholic priest, the Rev. Ken Vavrina, complained that “robber barons” and “billionaires” were getting richer and richer while middle-class wages have remained stagnant.

9. Rumors of a Nation Wide General Strike about to be called
Heard it mentioned on the radio today... emphasis on rumor. I'm fairly certain I was listening to FSRN... wondered if there were any discussions or rumors to that effect in your neck of the woods?

10. Has the Nebraska Democratic Party finally seen the light?
I laughed out loud a couple weeks ago when former NE governor Bob Kerrey referred to Ben Nelson's legislative legacy as "progressive populism", but I am seeing a few more signs that the NDP may have finally got religion after seeing the movement building upon Wisconsin's great uprising.

I've been highly critical of the Nebraska Democratic Party in recent years for what I see as a slavish devotion to Nelsonian "centrism". During these years, "populism" has remained a dirty word among Nebraska's political and media elites. But that seems to finally be changing. This may be just a cynical ploy by the Ben Nelson Machine to capitalize on a newly energized progressive movement, but paying lip service to progressive populism at least opens the door a crack and brings some respectability to true populists.

12. I BELIEVE

" .... we must guard against being fooled by false slogans, as 'right-to-work.' It provides no 'rights' and no 'works.' Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the FREEDOM OF COLLECTIVE BARGAINING... We demand this fraud be stopped.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.
