Successive British governments have misjudged the risk that UK arms exports to nations like Libya and Bahrain would be used to suppress their own people, MPs claim.
The Commons Committees on Arms Export Controls said British firms were given licences to sell equipment to countries in North Africa and the Middle East as recently as last year.
Small arms and tear gas canisters, as well as armoured personnel carriers were among the weaponry approved for export.
But since the recent uprisings in the region, 156 export licences to Libya, Bahrain, Egypt and Tunisia have been revoked.
