Priest admits affair with Monterey County schools superintendent
Source: San Bernardino County Sun

SAN BERNARDINO - A Roman Catholic priest with a worldwide television ministry based here has admitted to having a sexual relationship with his cousin, the Monterey County superintendent of schools.

The Rev. Michael Manning confirmed by phone that he had the relationship with Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Nancy Kotowski, when questioned about copies of correspondence sent to this newspaper that appeared to point to the two breaking off the relationship more than two years ago.

"We've been such good friends and there's a deep love we have for each other," Manning said. "The sexuality was secondary. It's very hard when you care for someone, but I love my priesthood more. I admit the fact of my sinfulness. I've done wrong. That's why I've stopped."

Kotowski briefly reflected on her relationship with Manning that spanned decades.

1. If they would allow priest to marry
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 01:01 PM by Drale
I would take the bet that incidents among the priesthood would become almost non existent.

EDIT: for spelling

3. That's funny! "Priesthood wood..."
The church should opt for chemical castration to eliminate these faux pas.

Hey, I'm just happy it's a scandal about a priest messing around with an adult for a change.

cousins are not actually very close genetically. Charles Darwin actually married his first cousin.

29. I think he/she meant the 'normal' priests

Presuming that there are enough of them, but the church has a pedophile problem, which they didn't consider a problem till recently, for at least a thousand years.

And so again it was behind the rest of the world in terms of moral enlightenment.

38. Nice slam. NOT! - False equivalency.
It would not surprise me to learn that preistly paedophila had something in common with practices like boarding school faggotry, ship's cabin boys, soldier's catamites and so forth. There is no special urge towards children, they are simply convenient, coercable, non-threatening and easily obtained.

Nothing makes such practices right in today's day and age, but in their place and time they were viewed as an acceptable (to a greater or lesser degree) means of seeking "release for one's frustrations."

Crude, harsh, insensitve, call it what you will, it doesn't change the truth of what was once the "norm". Given the conservative nature of the Church, it really is little surprise that the practice has survived there so long.

Allow priests to marry and that whole aspect of preistly paedophilia goes away.

18. Well then maybe they should allow women to also become priests
I know that won't happen anytime soon, but these are the things that need to happen if the Catholic church doesn't want to die.

23. Where would all the creepy guys go, then?
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 01:33 PM by caseymoz
The CC is not like other Christian churches. It can't bend that way. I'm convinced that every non-clerical Catholic will leave it before those guys would allow women to become priests.

Why? Because it's for their aggrandizement. Now, I'm an atheist, with fourteen years of Catholic education behind me, but that's what I see.

41. Not true -- hetereosexual males are our pedophiles, that's true --
Edited on Thu Apr-07-11 12:43 PM by defendandprotect
hetereosexual males are 100X more likely to sexually abuse a child --

than homosexual males.

However, pedophiles would be unlikely candidates for marriage --

though, of course, the notorious"Father James Porter" did marry and have children . . .

and later he was found to be not trying to sexually abuse the family baby sitter --

but that he had proably sexualy abused his own children!

43. "The sexuality was secondary." Yeah right.
His cousin yet. Particularly when you consider that second cousin marriage is grounds for annulment in the Catholic Church by the doctrine of consanguinity.

And this was apparently his first cousin. Yech.

There was also this.....

"That's the neat thing with Jesus. There can be the chance of starting again," Manning said.

Hmm. Apparently no concern about the hypocrisy and how that will affect his ministry. Jesus has forgiven him so everything is hunky dory. How convenient.

45. While I find the cousin aspect icky, as long as children are not involved, it's no big deal
I have no problem with priests having sexual relationships with other adults. I doubt that many priests are actually celibate. My only problem is that I suspect that many who are involved in consensual affairs with adults help to cover up the behavior of the pedophiles to keep their own affairs secret.
