Woman scavenging for copper wipes out internet service to neighbouring Armenia for 28 HOURS
Source: DailyMail.co.uk

A 75-year-old woman could be jailed after she cut off the internet services of an entire country. The elderly woman from Georgia cut through a fibre-optic cable while searching for scrap metal and managed to disable Armenia’s web connection for hours last month, as well as disrupting services in her homeland.

The Georgian interior ministry said the pensioner has been charged with damaging property and could be imprisoned for up to three years if found guilty.

The woman had been scavenging in the village of Ksani when she was disabled Armenia’s internet on March 28. She damaged a fibre-optic cable owned by the Georgian Railway Telecom company linking the eastern European nation to its neighbour and for most of that evening, customers of Armenia’s leading internet service providers were unable to get online.

Thousands of Georgian internet users also faced disruption when the cable was severed.

5. It's not a wire-
It was a fiber optic cable-probably the backbone of Armenia's internet- one fiber can carry enormous amounts of traffic. Just how many fibers were in that cable? It's possible that one fiber cable cut could isolate a small country like Armenia comletely- not just internet but land and cellular service as well.

4. Once an eldery woman reached the highest security pass in CIA?
Does anyone else recall this. She simply did not put on her security pass and the machines did not read any codes preventing her, so she just kept going.

Maybe it was the Pentagon?

7. Copper thieves are the worst
They get a small amount of money for salvaged copper that cost victims mucho dinero. A small print shop across the street has been hit twice with the thieves destroying their A/C condensing unit. The thieves got maybe $30.00 the print shop was out $5000.00.

it's enough to make you in favor of the death penalty

a couple of my friends owned small print shops, a couple of $5K losses and you can easily find yourself losing your business, in fact, one of them did

13. all metal thieves need to serve time
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 05:54 PM by pitohui
can't speak to georgia or armenia but in the southern usa, and esp. in louisiana, the copper "recyclers" are incredibly destructive -- tearing out the walls and the air conditioning units, destroying people's homes and apartments, and all for a few dollars!

for pennies on the dollar, they strip the metal right out of people's homes, harming our storm recovery, they have even been known to steal people's catalytic converters, destroying your car, to get enough dollars from the rare metal in the catalytic converter to smoke crack for a day or two, then they're out like a horde of locusts again, destroying everything in their wake

completely disgusted w. their ilk, they destroy our homes and infrastructure and don't even benefit themselves, they're doing this for trivial sums of money

entire architectural details were stolen from people's homes and vintage houses after katrina, never to be found again...this means part of our history went for MELT!

recycling my ass, when it comes to metal, call it what it is, grand fucking theft

no one should be allowed to recycle metals w.out very strict controls and a license

as for the old lady who stole copper and destroyed an entire country's internet service, she DEFINITELY needs to do time, maybe not 3 years but long enough to find out why she's out there destroying a valuable service to an entire country for pennies

17. new orleans is old fashioned
crack is still king is my general impression altho from time to time we hear of meth

same song, second verse, i know only one meth addict but she steals as much as any crackhead, that's for sure

these days i just avoid them all...they'll steal everything that isn't nailed down and sell it for pennies, just disgusting
