One dead in shooting at Southern Union State in Opelika (Alabama)

OPELIKA, ALA. (WBRC) - Opelika Police have confirmed that one person is dead, two have been shot and one injured by flying glass after a shooting occurred at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika just before 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon according to Fox 6 News's sister stations WVTM and WSFA.

Captain Allen Elkins with the Opelika Police Department told WTVM they believe they have an accurate description of a suspect and a vehicle they may be driving.

Teachers at Southern Union received a call from an automated system saying the school is on lockdown and classes had been canceled for the rest of the evening.

A spokeswoman for the school confirmed to WSFA in Montgomery that from what she has been told, the shooting took place outside while students were changing classes.

Fox 6 are not flaming conservatives. Besides, the story was reported by some downstate stations as Opelika is 105 mi SE of Birmingham. It's unfortunate that it happened at that particular school, I know quite well, but this could have been Insert Name Here.

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) -- A shooting at an east Alabama community college on Wednesday killed one woman, wounded two others and injured a child who was hit by flying glass, authorities said.

Police had a suspect though he wasn't in custody and said the gunfire resulted from a domestic dispute.

Photos and video from the scene showed a Toyota minivan with three windows shot out in a parking lot outside a building at Southern Union Community College in Opelika. Student Quay Thomas said he heard nine shots.

"It was terrifying," said the 17-year-old. "I wouldn't think anything like this would happen at a college campus."

Police said a 63-year-old woman was killed, and women ages 36 and 94 were shot. The 4-year-old hit with glass was being treated at a hospital.
