Obama threatens to veto GOP budget extension plan
Edited on Thu Apr-07-11 12:14 PM by onehandle
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – House Republicans advanced a bill Thursday that would avoid a government shutdown for one more week, cut spending and fully fund the Pentagon, but the White House labeled the measure a distraction and said President Barack Obama would veto it.

Obama said in a statement he believes "we need to put politics aside and work out our differences" on a spending plan that covers the government through September, when the current budget year ends.

The president has signed two short-term extensions, but negotiations have proceeded fitfully.

The veto threat marked a sour turn in talks that Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday night were showing promise.

1. Americans should join him and issue a boycott threat: boycott big business!
Time to start walking, literally. Gas is too expensive and Exxon-Koch have too much money. The exercise will do you good.

3. Fully fund the Pentagon, but the rest of us are screwed.
I'm not Obama cheerleader, but I support his veto threat.

5. I congratulate President Obama on the Veto threat.
I "hope" its not another empty promise.
I will STAND with him if he STANDS with us.
:patriot:

Who will STAND and FIGHT for THIS American Majority?
Lofty Rhetoric, Broken Promises, and Whiny Excuses mean NOTHING now.
"By their WORKS you will know them,"
and by their WORKS they will be judged.

12. Me, too. But he has to mean it.
Stand up to bullies and they go crying to Mama. Then get you in an alley with a two by four. Stay out of alleys.

7. This is a situation where he needs to put his foot down. We cannot
keep giving in on so many programs every week. They are either going to have to be told to go right ahead and shut the government down - we have no more to give away. If he does not they will just keep playing this game for a week at a time until they have accomplished their goal of destroying government. Enough.

8. He would never veto it.
The only way he could veto the bill would be if it first passes both houses... which means that at least some Senate Democrats voted for it.

If they pass a bill in both houses with some democratic support and the president vetos it... there would be no way to claim that republicans were responsbile for the shutdown.

14. Last September
Why didn't President Obama propose a budget last September that fully funded PP and NPR when we had the votes to pass it? Why didn't Pelosi or Reid insist on one? I'm interested in thoughts on this.

15. The Teabaggers will find fault in him doing what they want
They've been dying to shut the government down. Now I bet they'll suddenly condemn him for it.
