(Bell, Calif.) Scandal-rocked Los Angeles suburb swears in new City Council members
Source: Associated Press

BELL, Calif. — The Los Angeles working-class suburb of Bell has sworn in a brand-new City Council.

In March, outraged residents stormed the polls to kick out the four City Council members accused of looting the city by doing out enormous salaries to themselves. The fifth council member who was not charged lost his bid for re-election.

1. Don't know anything about the 5th member but as the old saying goes
When the police raid the brothel they haul out the piano player as well.

2. Sometimes
you just need to clean house, and if ever there was a case of needing to do that, this is it. What happened in Bell is an example of what is going on at a huge range of institutions in this country, not just in government but in the corporate and non-corporate spheres as well. IMO the finances of a typical university in this country in the present day are at least as scandalous.

3. I don't know about universities, but in general, I agree.
At least lecturers aren't paid enough, but I have no idea what people in admin make. I really wish that the general shock and outrage that people felt about this town council were felt about all of the companies that people (sometimes by need) deal with every day.

4. Good to see the citizens woke up

Too bad the incident is used by the corporate media to paint broad brush strokes over us all working in the public sector and in their war against government in general.

I realize the citizens were "outraged" but I temper this realization with the knowledge that the citizens of Bell, prior to this coming to light, were apathetic, not involved, and very low voter turnouts.
