Ex-US college basketball players charged in game-fixing
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Ten people, including two former basketball players and a former assistant coach at the University of San Diego, have been indicted in connection with a scheme to fix games since 2008, federal prosecutors said on Monday.

The defendants were charged in the federal grand jury indictment with scheming to fix University of San Diego Toreros basketball games by bribing players and then betting on the games in Las Vegas.

All 10 defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit sports bribery, conduct an illegal gambling business and distribute marijuana.

The indictment charged that the profits from selling marijuana and betting on the games were used to fund further dealing and bribing.

2. I can't keep this quiet any longer my conscience is bothering me
In 1959 I bet on a basketball game I played in.

My cousin played on the other high school team and we each bet $10 on our teams. Our team won and he reneged on the bet.

He was later killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam.

Can I still get in trouble?

I can see it stayed on your own personal permanent record.

start screaming about Planned Parenthood killing innocents with the next breath.

5. Statement from USD President on FBI Probe
Statement from USD President on FBI Probe
link

Dear Campus Community,

This morning, University of San Diego officials were notified of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that resulted in the arrest of two former USD athletes, and a former athletics department employee. We are informed that former students Brandon Dowdy and Brandon Johnson, and former assistant coach Thaddeus Brown, are three of ten people who have been indicted for charges arising out of an alleged “conspiracy to commit sports bribery, to operate an illegal sports bookmaking service, and to distribute marijuana.”

These are very serious allegations and the university is fully cooperating with the investigation. Shortly after learning about the probe, USD representatives contacted the NCAA to inform them about the situation.

This story is expected to garner intense media interest. Please be reminded that all contact with the media on behalf of the University of San Diego must be referred to the Office of Public Affairs, (619) 260-4681.

As a values-based institution, USD is committed to the principles of integrity, fairness and equity. While the investigation continues, we will do everything we can to support our campus community allowing our students and faculty to focus their attention on a successful end of another academic year.

Sincerely,

Mary E. Lyons, Ph.D.
President

NOTE: emphasis mine

7. and that team has been mediocre or less since making the 2008 NCAA tournament
2008-09 season record: 16-16 (6-8 in West Coast Conference)
2009-10: 11-21 (3-11 WCC)
2010-11: 6-24 (2-12 WCC)

that was after a 2007-08 season where the Toreros went 22-14 (11-3 WCC) and advanced to the 2nd round of the 2008 NCAA tournament.

Pathetic all around.

8. They used to call it "shaving"
Shaving points to meet the bookies' demands. It's as old as the hills.

I remember the scandals from back in the 60s and 70s.

10. Well thank god for that.
Sure we may not prosecute torture, war crimes, or any kind of bank fraud, but don't you miss a single layup on purpose or you'll face the full might Justice!
