CNN Poll: Trump tied for first in GOP horserace
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) - Donald Trump is now tied with Mike Huckabee for first place when Republicans are asked who they support for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, according to a new national poll.

But while a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday indicates that the real estate mogul and reality TV star has nearly doubled his support since mid-March, it doesn't mean he has smooth sailing ahead.

"More than four in ten Republicans say they would not like to see Trump toss his hat in the ring," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Nineteen percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents questioned in the poll say that as of now, they'd be most likely to support Trump for next year's GOP presidential nomination. Trump says he'll decide by June whether he runs for the White House. An equal amount say they'd back Huckabee. The former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate says he'll decide by later this year if he'll make another bid for the White House.

I'm inclined to discount Trump real strength, since it's still a year before voting, nobody's seriously campaigning, and people are going to respond to name recognition as much as ideology. Still, it says something that he's the guy the early-involvement party faithful responding to. The "mainstream" candidates must be sweating over the inevitable "birther" questions they're going to get asked.

10. They have to prove how much they hate...
Poor people
Black people
Muslims
Immigrants
Science
Unions
Teachers

Then how much they love...
Rich people
White people
Corporations
Oil

That's the test for GOP acceptance. You'll see Trump going down the list as will the rest.

Societal norms have changed. Look at Limbaugh and Fox News. Look at Ann Coulter, Palin, blah, blah, blah. You get the picture. Crazy has a real chance this next election if the corporate media get behind it. In fact stupid is an asset as long as the Rethuglican is willing to take orders from Wall Street. I think that perfectly defines Trump.

28. If this isn't a testimony on the stupidity of the American voter, I don't know what is.
Let's see...you put this glorified idiot Trump on a media blitz for the past few weeks, you poll a sample of voters, and PRESTO!! Who do you think they're going to favor for president?

What makes Trump a good presidential candidate? His multiple bankruptcies? His fake appearance? His TV show?

What if we actually elect him president and the inevitable failed presidency follows. Then the media orchestrate the "We never saw THIS coming" mindset across the country, as if their constant propping up of the guy didn't create the situation.

The media do this all of the time and too many people in this country are too stupid to see through it.

35. I think you're right. I think he will win the nomination no matter if he runs
Republican or Independent for one simple reason: People are familiar with him because of his moronic show. I would bet he will straighten China up pronto, doing whatever he has to do. Can he beat Obama? I don't know. It will depend on whether Obama tries to cut entitlements or even adjust them. And other things in the next year. One thing for sure: Trump would pull us out of the wars. Trump thinks such things are wastes of money. Now, might he be bought by the military industrial complex? Yeah, could be. Going to be a real strange year. I never in a million years thought Trump would run for President. For one thing, he hates politics.

46. Yes. Once he moved quickly to get our money back for the wars
in terms of oil, leases, etc., he'd settle with the Iraqis for paying back Britain, France, etc, then advise the Iraqis what we want right now. I believe he would do the same in Afghanistan. It would be all business. He would stop participation in Libya quickly. He wouldn't care about political considerations; it would be all about deals and not wasting money. That's what I think hearing him on a few talk shows. He hated George Bush with a passion and has no use for Obama because he thinks Obama is simply doing the same things as Bush. He likes doing charity work and gives a lot of money himself. The biggest drawback is he wouldn't know anyone. He would hire people differently and probably no Washington insiders, based on their accomplishments. One of the reasons I don't like the guy is because he is so matter-of-fact about everything, like he's got PERT networks going in his head all the time. He's an excellent executive, alhtough I don't know much about his personal talents and skills.

55. However I think he'd have a hard time in a political environment.
He's used to calling the shots and having things done his way without a lot of debate or argument. In politics there are checks and balances and deals and compromises, so even with the best of ideas and intentions it's hard to get things done quickly and efficiently. So I'm surprised he would even put himself into an environment like that. It's going to be interesting, in any case.

54. FAUX News will give his candidacy all out support
Edited on Tue Apr-12-11 08:29 PM by OmahaBlueDog
He'll make for terrific infotainment.

That's what the American people really want. A SOTU speech where he says "You're Fired."

See my prior post on this topic:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x869641

Why the Donald Trump Candidacy Should Be Taken Seriously

1) He's a household name
2) In addition to #1, he's a reality TV star. The media would love a Trump White House. So would a large segment of the American people. Why solve problems when you can be entertained?
3) Trump appeals to the same type of independent voters that liked Ross Perot - people who think a pro-business outsider would be the best option to handle the mess in Washington
4) Trump will likely have strong appeal in New York, New Jersey, and Florida (Florida because of the high number of NY/NJ expats)
5) He has money to finance a campaign, and money to raise heaps more money to finance a campaign.
6) Pawlenty and Romney put people to sleep; Newt Gingrich is an unlikable has-been; names like Thune, Pence, and Daniels get thrown around, but keep failing to emerge
7) The GOP is waking up to the fact that Sarah Palin is unelectable
8) He's very media savvy, which is why he's embraced the "birther" meme. It gives him instant credibility with the fundie wing of the party, who would otherwise shun him. He knows he doesn't have to prove anything -- just keep planting doubt.
9) He's gonna "make a better deal with China" regarding our debt (see Nixon: I have a secret plan to win the Vietnam war)
10) Even though he has not one ounce of policical experience, Republicans see him as Reaganesque, which is funny, because Reagan has been Governor of California for eight years before becoming President.
11) The delegate awarding system they will use this time bodes well for him.
12) The Republicans are desperate for a savior

Do I see him winning the nomination? I'm still going with my original prediction, which is Mike Huckabee/Chris Christie. If Trump does get nominated, my prediction is that his VP will be Jeb Bush.
