FBI Snatches Alleged Pirate Inside Somalia
Source: wsj

In a first for U.S. anti-piracy efforts, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents ventured into Somalia to arrest the man who allegedly oversaw ransom negotiations for four Americans held hostage and later killed by pirates.

Mohammad Shibin, 50 years old, was captured in a joint operation, led by the FBI and coordinated with Somali authorities.

U.S. agents had never before apprehended an alleged pirate on land, though it has prosecuted a number of Somali pirates caught attacking U.S. ships in the Arabian Sea. To date, counter-piracy efforts had been waged almost exclusively in millions of square miles of ocean off the Horn of Africa.

Andrew Shapiro, the State Department's point man on piracy, said last month the U.S. was preparing a "more energetic and comprehensive" approach to piracy, with a special focus on "pirate leaders and financiers" onshore.

12. The FBI has always had an international presence
In fact, J. Edgar Hoover tried hard to bring overseas intelligence into the FBI sphere just prior to WWII. Wiser heads prevailed and the OSS/CIA was born, although the FBI was given responsibility for South America during the war years to pacify Hoover. After 9-11, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies were integrated into the overseas counterterrorism fight. The FBI has had a presence in Afghanistan for several years, as has the DEA and others. A lot of what they do overlaps, there's not a clear division of labor, and everybody tries to expand their area of responsibility for budget and prestige purposes.

OTOH, this is the official narrative. It could well be a cover story. Maybe the FBI really did get them. Or maybe it was Delta Force and giving the FBI credit is less inflammatory than a military snatch operation on foreign soil. Or maybe somebody was paid off to deliver them and this story shields whoever turned on them. All we know for sure is that the US has them in custody now.

2. That is great. Because the pirate leaders have been feeling absolutely no fear
from their safe havens in Somalia. Hopefully this will discourage the practice.

6. You may be interested to know
that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

13. O' Magnum Mysterum
Has any one else noticed that there have been no more pirate attacks on Russian ships, after the first one that happened some time ago? The official Russian story is that they let the SOB's go after the Russian commandos re-took their ship back again from the pirates. But the funny thing is, no one has heard from the offending pirates since then. I mean they just vanished from the face of the Earth, or is it the sea? Could this be a connection, or perhaps even an implied solution to the pirate terrorist problem? All the USA needs to do now is grow a pair. And, by the way, has anyone else noticed that Israel doesn't seem to be having a problem with pirate terrorists? The possible reason could be that everyone already knows that they don't need to grow a pair. It is the kind of implied wisdom that is difficult to show on a graph.
