One Dead, Four Critically Hurt, One Missing In Atoka County (OK, Tornado)

A dispatcher in Atoka County confirms to NewsChannel 8 that at least one person has died in a tornado there.

At least four tornadoes have touched down in the county tonight. We're told four people are critically injured and one other person is missing. People have been trapped in their homes, power lines are down and the work is continuing to survey the damage.

The worst of the damage appears to be near Tushka, just south of Atoka.

I've travelled between Dallas and Tulsa alot over the years...all the town people and their establishments have always been very welcoming when we have stopped to stretch our legs or grab a snack. Stopped at Atoka's Dairy Queen alot.

Tushka, Atoka, Stringtown. Anyone who has travelled along 75 frequently knows those towns. I am not sure the houses along there could make it thru a strong wind, never mind twisters. Mainly very, very small framehouses that are realllllly old looking.

It is scary, though, as you drive further up the highway and get to the Indian Nation Turnpike and realize you have NO where to hide if a twister comes along. No where. If you are lucky maybe you are still close to the McDonalds there but once you go past that, it's you and the wilderness. I postponed my return trip to Dallas one time when I saw that twisters were in that part of the state because of that very reason. Beautiful scenary there but the thought of trying to find a secure place to take cover, not good.
