Jon Kyl Now Says He Misspoke On Planned Parenthood So Everyone Should Please Stop Making Fun Of Him
Source: Jason Linkins - 04/15/11 11:31 AM ET - Huffington Post

Last week, Senator Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) received a fusillade of criticism when he took to the Senate floor to declare that abortion was "well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does." That criticism soon turned to ridicule after his office responded by releasing a statement that said that "his remark was not intended to be a factual statement." Everyone has been making fun of him on Twitter and on late night comedy shows, and it really hurt his feelings. So now, Kyl is "clarifying" himself once again.

Asked if he regretted the flap, Kyl said Thursday: "I misspoke when I said what I said on the floor - and I said so."

But what about the claim that it was "not intended to be a factual statement" when Kyl said 90 percent of Planned Parenthood's services were abortion related? "That was not me - that was my press person," he said.

43. Yep. "Misspeaking" is your mouth saying something your mind never intended.
Edited on Sat Apr-16-11 06:50 AM by No Elephants
An example would be: You know how to pronounce a word a word correctly, but, to your surprise, when you hear yourself say it, you realize you've accidentally mispronounced it.

It is not, as politicians would have us believe, simply a euphemism for getting caught lying.

on the record, and with lots of press coverage. Tell the truth, only about 3% of services provided by PP are abortion related. And god damn it, no federal money is used to fund that part of their services. Tell us what PP really does. Say it on record, and say it in the press.

I see it now, Teabaggers all over the country will be quoting him forever.

47. I wonder who the first Senator will be who asks Kyl on the Senate if that is a factual statement,
when he makes stuff up again. My bets are on John Kerry, who during the START treaty debate challenged McConnell for bringing up things already debunked - asking if they thought just making things up on the Senate floor was ok.

Kyl has seriously damaged his reputation because it is true that he was quite willing to make stuff up.

70. LTOE in Arizona Daily Star - Kyl the snake
This statement not intended to be factual

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl said, when speaking on the U.S. Senate floor, "well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does is to provide abortions." When questioned about the accuracy of his statement (Planned Parenthood spends only 3 percent on abortions), he said his assertion was "not intended to be a factual statement."

Here in Arizona it is well known that Kyl once or more a year slivers into the tall grass and sheds his skin. This is not intended to be a factual statement.

Edited on Sat Apr-16-11 01:06 PM by mwb970
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2702738/posts

It begins with the assumption that CNN "wildly misquoted" Kyl and goes downhill from there. In the first part, they seem baffled about what he actually said and what the true number is. Then there is this:

To: Alas Babylon!

Well, even according to the link from PP above, it’s 3% of their total services, not just surgical procedures, which are a pretty small part.

I heard that Kyl has even backpedaled on the quote and stated he “didn’t intend it to be factual”.

*facepalm*

85. When one stands in the the Well off the Senate and makes a statement...
first, you better have your facts straight; second, if you make an error, (which we all do from time to time, although not from the Well of the Senate), own up to it, say you are sorry, and the American people are people are pretty forgiving. As always, the cover-up trumps the initial gaff.

In this case, from a prepared speech, Kyl blatantly lied, then made the problem exponentially worse buy incredibly having the #not intended to be a factual statement line go out. Even more ridiculous, is that he has just exponentially increased the problem once again about whining about it...again! And not offering the obvious correction!

From what I understand, (I saw this on Rachel), I don't know the #'s, but PP has received increased support, through letters, e-mails and donations since this flap has gone viral. PP has a very serious ally in Kyl, albeit an unwilling one.

Senator Kyl, PP and I, thank you for being sot friggin' stupid!

98. BIG Government
Senator Kyl's office is so big that he has no control over the words that his "press person" puts in his mouth. Perhaps we could save thousands of dollars if we canned Kyl's incompetent mouthpieces and let him speak for himself. And he complains about big government!

107. No, Senator, you did not "misspeak!"
Edited on Sat Apr-16-11 04:10 PM by markpkessinger
You knew exactly what you wanted to sa, because if you had spoken truthfully, then your statement would have gone something like, "Abortion represents 3% of the services offered by Planned Parenthood." But since that wouldn't make your argument for you, you pulled the number you wanted out of your sorry Republican asshole.

The word "misspoke" has become a non-accountable way politicians explain themselves when they've been caught in a blatant lie, in a rather similar fashion to the wya the phrase "mistakes were made" has become the non-accountable way to appear to be accountable for one's misdeeds.
