Accept £100,000 or get nothing, Murdoch lawyers tell Sienna
Source: The Independent

Actress sienna Miller has been offered £100,000 by the News of The World to settle her phone hacking damages claim and the newspaper will seek to have her case thrown out of court if she fails to accept, lawyers for the Sunday tabloid said yesterday.

The six-figure offer is the first evidence of a News International strategy to halt further revelations against it in civil cases by offering substantial settlements. It has emerged that the actress claims her email account as well as phone messages was hacked using information obtained by the private detective Glenn Mulcaire

1. In the US ...
With decent representation in court - She would clean their clock ....

I am not sure what would happen in the UK .... This seems a pretty brazen attack against a victim ...

19. THey have a rule in england that murdoch is exploiting....
if a person is offered a settlement and they don't take it and go to court instead they become liable for the court costs IF they only win that amount or less. The law is to keep people from using the courts to air grievances (so they say) but it means if Sienna Miller goes to court and wins 100,000 or less SHE has to pay for all the costs!

4. I hope she has very good, very mean lawyers.
I hope she hired killer sharks.

Trying to settle by making threats is an invitation to vengeance IMHO.

5. About $163,000. Isn't this really ...
... an admission of guilt on Murdoch's part, offering a settlement? I don't know how the system works in the UK, but if it's anything like ours, I'd lawyer up and multiply that sum several times over.

12. Not necessarily.
Sometimes it's cheaper to settle, so you can't really take settlement as an admission of guilt.

17. In the UK, the loser of a civil suit must pay the legal costs of the
winner. When those costs can bankrupt you, there is a strong incentive to settle.

offering her money is their means to shut down the legal system.

15. I can't imagine she'd settle for such a paltry sum
She is a decent actress, no? I'd imagine money means less to her than punishing those SOBs. 100,000 pounds is no punishment at all.
