Families of Bulgarian troops in Karbala want them taken to safety

SOFIA (AFP) - Relatives of Bulgaria's troops in Iraq (news - web sites) asked President Georgy Parvanov to move the men from the strife-torn holy city of Karbala to a "safer place" if fighting there flared again.

"We have asked that if the situation in Karbala worsens, the soldiers be withdrawn to a safer place," said Lubcho Panaiotov, whose son-in-law is in Iraq, after meeting Parvanov.

"The president understands our fears. He assured us that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of our boys," Panaiotov said, although adding that for the moment no withdrawal was on the cards.

Pressure has risen on the government to pull out Bulgaria's 480 troops, who are stationed in Karbala as part of an international force under Polish command, since five died in mulitiple car-bombings in the city on December 27.
