Bahrain escapes censure by West as crackdown on protesters intensifies
Source: The Independent

Bahraini government forces backed by Saudi Arabian troops are destroying mosques and places of worship of the Shia majority in the island kingdom in a move likely to exacerbate religious hatred across the Muslim world.

"So far they have destroyed seven Shia mosques and about 50 religious meeting houses," said Ali al-Aswad, an MP in the Bahraini parliament.

He said Saudi soldiers, part of the 1,000-strong contingent that entered Bahrain last month, had been seen by witnesses helping demolish Shia mosques and shrines in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

Hmmm...destroying the other guys' mosques...not a way to make friends.

So, although we've been told that it's under control, it's not.

3. The US just sent an envoy there the other day (I think yesterday).
They're obviously going to work out what is going to be said on this, so both sides are on the same page. Last thing anyone wants is for Iran to get itself involved.

4. See...if a repub were pResident he'd plant a big sloppy kiss on
the Saudi Arabian royalty's lips, like brother W and shotgun Cheney did for years.

Destabilization accomplished...

5. Obviously not a popular subject ...
> The harshness of the government repression is provoking allegations of hypocrisy
> against Washington, London and Paris. Their mild response to human rights abuses
> and the Saudi Arabian armed intervention in Bahrain is in stark contrast to their
> vocal concern for civilians in Libya.

> The US and Britain have avoided doing anything that would destabilise Saudi Arabia
> and the Sunni monarchies in the Gulf, to which they are allied.

> The US has a lot to lose because its Fifth Fleet, responsible for the Gulf and the
> north of the Indian Ocean, is based in Bahrain.

> Even waving a Bahraini flag is considered an offence

Seems to be a real lack of "supporters of democracy" on this topic ...?

6. is there any doubt left as to why we support one side over another?
We support the rebels in Libya because the Eastern half of the nation has the oil. the rebels currently control the eastern half.

we get our oil from saudi arabia so we support their crushing of what was once a peaceful protest movement in a neighboring country. saudi arabia is the #2 supplier of US oil (Canada is #1) and is #1 among OPEC nations.

proxy-wars for oil.

7. The war crimes never stop
If we had a President or Secretary of State with a detectable soul perhaps we wouldn't support this outrage.

When can we get a President that doesn't deserve a trip to the Hague. There have been none in my lifetime.
