Protests After Syria Ends 48-Year Emergency

Pro-democracy demonstrations have erupted in the city of Banias in Syria after the country's state of emergency, which existed for nearly 50 years, was lifted.

The removal of the country's 48-year-old state of emergency has been a key demand of anti-government protesters.

The Syrian government also approved the abolition of the state security court which dealt with the trials of political prisoners and passed a new law allowing peaceful demonstrations - but only if approved by the interior ministry.

The raft of new measures seems aimed at calming the two weeks of violent unrest that has gripped the country.
