Police: 5-Year-Old Takes Gun To School
Source: Houston News

Investigators said the gun was found at Ross Elementary in the 2819 Bay St., on Tuesday.

Houston Independent School District officials said there was an incident at the school, but would not say what it was. The school was placed on lockdown.

Police and emergency medical services personnel went to the school about 11 a.m. and took at least three children out on stretchers. Officials have not released any information about those children or what injuries they may have suffered.

Detectives have not said if shots were fired at the school.

Guns don't kill people, 5-yearolds do. When guns are outlawed only 5-yearolds will have guns.

Obviously we ALL have the right to carry weapons wherever and whenever we choose....or so many here on DU would have you believe.

15. I believe owners of private property have the right to exclude anyone or anything
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 12:30 PM by slackmaster
Public institutions should be able to exclude weapons, but only if they provide real security like that found at airports and courthouses.

Places that have real safety hazards such as pressurized gas containers should not allow firearms.

Otherwise, people who are licensed to carry weapons should be allowed to carry them anywhere.

Example provided does not even remotely fit the conditions you set, i.e. no restrictions whatsoever. I'm sure that OneTenthofOnePercent would agree that all civil rights are subject to restrictions.

Of course, you could just ASK him for clarification.

24. I don't see it that way.
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 12:56 PM by Buzz Clik
When I stated that I support the restrictions that keep firearms out of my classroom, and he comes back and tells me to quit my job because his civil rights guarantee him the right to carry in the classroom, he surely isn't lined up with the idea that guns can be restricted.

I'd agree that he might -- might -- agree that a 6-year-old should not be allowed to have a concealed, loaded weapon at school, and that constitutes a restriction. But OneTenthofOnePercent is a long way off from your approach.

37. If you want to forbid guns, you need to actually do it
VA Tech was a "gun free zone", except it wasn't because access wasn't actually controlled. If you decide to disarm guests you have a responsibility to make sure that everybody who comes in is actually disarmed.

OTOH Columbine had metal detectors; Harris and Klebold went around them.

and eventually you can start to blur the line between what they actually said and what you attributed to them.

Maybe not enough to convince most people, but enough to sway those who are undecided.

One of the more unprofessional tacks of radio talk show hosts and anti-gun types.

40. The problem with anti-gun fanatics
is that they can't tell the difference between the mental maturity of a 5 year old and an adult.

Then they extrapolate that to everyone and wet themselves at the thoughts of guns in the hands of the public.

I for one *can* tell the difference.

5 year olds can't be adults when it comes to knowing consequences for their actions then children when it comes to sentencing.

There's a reason we treat minors differently in the courts.

29. OMG......
:wtf:That is the school across the freeway from our school. I hate that I hear about this on LBN instead of from HISD.

Now imagine this incident happening in the schools after the soon to be layoffs. This is a tough neighborhood but that is a decent school and I am sure the little kid brought it to school innocently enough. I pray every night that my kids don't start bringing guns to school. We have fights but so far they are jusr fist fights.

Oh, and I am the school nurse I got my layoff notice last week. As sure as I am writing this, we will have kids die next year because there was no nurse at the school. We seem expensive now, but wait til they have to pay for a wrongful death lawsuit. Color me gone.
