Poll: 48% Of Iowa Republicans Say Obama Wasn’t Born In U.S.
Source: TPM

Nearly half of usual Republican primary voters in Iowa think President Obama was not born in the United States, while barely one-quarter believe he was, according to a PPP poll released on Tuesday. In the poll, 48% of registered Republican voters said Obama was not born in the U.S., while 26% said he was. Additionally, 26% said they were unsure.

That percentage is actually slightly better than the national average for typical Republican primary voters, a majority of whom believe Obama was born outside the U.S. In February, a PPP poll found that 51% of registered Republican voters said Obama was not born in the U.S., compared to 28% who said he was, and 21% who were unsure.

However, the high birther base does not necessarily mean that the issue will be critical in determining which candidate wins Iowa. Donald Trump, who has vaulted to the front of several polls through a media blitz in which he’s repeatedly questioned Obama’s birth, placed a modest third in the poll’s hypothetical primary election. While 19% of voters who doubted Obama’s citizenship backed Trump, 25% broke for Huckabee.

The PPP poll was conducted April 15-17 among 419 registered Republican voters. It has a margin of error of 4.8%.

1. 48% don't necessarily believe that. 48% *SAY* they believe that.
Probably about 15% of them don't believe it, but hope that if they SAY they believe that, more stupid people will buy into it.

19. I thinks its a bit different than that
I agree that 48% probably don't actually believe it...but telling people (like pollsters, libruls etc) that they believe it is a "fuck you" aimed at people who voted for Obama, who disagree with them on various subjects etc. No evidence will convince them because it isn't about actual belief or actual evidence, but merely a giant middle finger of frustration...frustration that a black dude is president.

Yes, some would be just as miserable if Obama were Republican, but I think this group would hate any Dem President. They sure hated Bubba and he was as white as it gets in the U.S.

48% of Iowa Republicons said Obama wasn't born in the United States. Instead, they think he was born in America. It was a trick question. They aren't birthers, they just learned geography from Iowa native Michelle Bachman.

24. Why do the questions remain?
If this matter could be swiftly cleared up...maybe a press conference with the Hawaii department of records...why is it not being done?

I have no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii, but I do not understand what seems like stubborn petulance coming from the White House. I can see that the administration did not want to stoop to the level of the birthers when this "scandal" first hit the air, but it has dragged on and on, and now with The Hair wading in, I think its time for Obama to stop holding his breath and do whatever he can to silence them for good. This administration is almost as stubborn to NOT address birther concerns as it is to NOT address liberals concerns.

Otherwise you get sites like this:
http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/4-versions-of-obamas-certificate-of-live-birth/
This site encourages others and spreads the rumours further. It should never gotten to 48%...even for Repubs.

The only other possible explanation is that there is simply no way to prove his birth place. To that I would say WTF? A rich proud nation like the USA cannot even prove where its citizens are from or even if they are citizens? Wow.

“There have been numerous requests for Sen. Barack Hussein Obama’s official birth certificate.
State law (Hawai‘i Revised Statutes §338-18) prohibits the release of a certified birth certificate

“Therefore, I as Director of Health for the State of Hawai‘i, along with the Registrar of Vital

54. Evidently this is not enough
There is confusion still about the validity of a Certificate of Live Birth. There exists a Birth Certificate , and what I am saying is that it is OBVIOUS that Obama and his staff have not done enough to silence these whack jobs once and for all.

CHIYOME FUKINO says he has seen the BC but that the law "prohibits the release of a certified birth certificate
to persons who do not have a tangible interest in the vital record".

Doesn't Obama have a tangible interest here? Couldn't they black out any personal numbers and info?

To me it smacks of a stand off for the sake of not being seen as capitulating to the MORANS in the Tea Party. Petulance may be a strong word, but seems like stubbornness at the very least. This might have worked in the past, but in this day of FAUX News, and hate radio, where, because of the lopsided plethora of those outlets available, folks never ever have to listen to anything other than fabricated paranoid anti-American crap. And they believe because THEY WANT TO BELIEVE. Some will continue to believe that crap even if someone grabs their head and forces it down on a table and pushes their noses right into the center of the original Birth Certificate. Even then they may close their eyes so they won't actually see it. But still, there are obviously enough borderline doubters out there that make it important for the administration to understand how it could effect his re-election. This has become a ridiculous standoff that Obama could clear up by releasing a redacted version of his BC.

Just Do It

39. What more could possibly be done?
He showed the certification of live birth (which Hawaii uses as its official birth certificate like many other states these days). That certificate shows him born in Honolulu. He could not possibly have this if he wasn't born in Honolulu. To right-thinking people this is the end of the topic. He should have to do NOTHING more than this. There is no refusal to address it...he did address it by releasing that document...he's done now. There is nothing else to talk about and no more proof should be necessary.

But more proof has come out anyway. You have the two newspapers back in '61 announcing his birth in Hawaii. You have the Republican governor of Hawaii saying she has seen the evidence he was born there. You have the Hawaiian government saying they have seen the birth certificate and can assure us he was born in Hawaii. How much more can you possibly ask for?

You used the phrase "stubborn petulance coming from the White House." All I can say to that is BULLSHIT! He has done more than any other president ever to show his place of birth. He has released documents that are official state documents that should have cleared it up instantly to ANY sane individual. Aside from building a time machine to go watch the event I would like for you to suggest something that hasn't already been done. The only "stubborn petulance" that has been shown is by birthers who will never believe he was born here (mostly because he is black and they're racists) no matter how much evidence shows that he was and from posters like you who still think he has more to do. He doesn't. He proved it beyond the shadow of a doubt. Done. Finished. No more reason to talk about it...ever. Anyone who questions it after all that has been shown is just a racist or plain stupid (or both).

42. Seriously I've asked myself this same thing and.....
it would be so easy to prove it true. President Obama is the only one who can release his actual birth cert, so why doesn't he??

I'm guessing that he likes the Repubes all debating this because it is distracting them from the real issues. Then, in Sept or Oct 2011 he'll release it and all the stuff they've been spouting and obsessing over for the past 4 years will be moot and he'll be way ahead of them by then in the polls and on the issues.

It would be great for President Obama to go up against one of these wackos who thinks this BECAUSE it would be so easy to prove it is false. It's just a matter of WHEN is the best time to do this.

46. He's released his certification of live birth
which functions as a birth certificate in many states. He isn't going to release anything in 2011 because he has already shown beyond a reasonable doubt that he was born in Hawaii. Nothing else needs to be done. Anyone who still has questions with all the available evidence has them because they are hyperpartisan and won't see any evidence ever for any reason, because they are racist and hate having a bad president, and/or they are just stupid.

The issue is closed.

50. The issue is definitely NOT closed - did you see the results of the Iowa poll??
I'm guessing you did since you clicked on it and read through the responses.

The people don't want to see the "certificate of live birth which functions as a birth certificate in many states" they want to see the actual birth certificate. All President Obama has to do is release it and there will never be one word about it ever again.

At first, I felt the same way as you do and defended the President but it's carried on too long and now he's basking in the confusion they are creating for it. This really is great for him and he'll release it during the next campaign. He will literally get barraged with questions about it during every campaign stop. It will be the focus of the election....UNTIL he releases the actual thing and no one can ask about it ever again. By that point the Repubes will be playing catch up.

52. This is my point
It seems on here there can be no middle ground. If you question why this has not been cleared up yet, you are accused of being a "birther".

I was on the same wavelength. Obama the 3 dimensional chess player. He is simply waiting for the day that it will have the greatest impact and then he will release it. But now I don't know. The plan seems to be that if they ignore it, it will go away. But that 48% number proves it is NOT going away and whether we think it utterly incredulous or not, it will sway voters. Especially when there is silence coming from the White House.

53. Like I said in response to the above poster......
The Repubes will let this dominate the debate in the election. Last time it was "associates with terrorists" which was obviously false and *most* people knew it wasn't true. Next year it will be "may not be US citizen" and this will be their major complaint against him. He will be asked about it incessently (sp?) to the point where it will literally be the #1 issue in the election. He'll release it and no one will ever be able to talk about it ever again, and then he'll clean up in the election.

... the poorly-written lead states that "Nearly half of usual Republican primary voters ..."

I assume the writer *meant* caucus goers. The key is just that ... only the most strident or most partisan party members attend Iowa caucuses. It is only a fraction of those actually registered in the party, which is only a fraction of the entire electorate (in Iowa, you can register your party affiliation).

Caucuses are something different than primaries, caucuses can and occasionally do last for many hours, with lots of debate and horsetrading, lobbying for candidates. Because of that, few people claim to be regular Iowa caucus goers and even fewer actually do attend. It is much, much different than primaries (which is both good and bad).
