Petitions urge Snyder to not cut Earned Income Tax Credit
Karen Bouffard / Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Lansing— Gov. Rick Snyder must abandon his plan to eliminate tax credits for the working poor, according to coalition of opponents who delivered today to the governor's office petitions signed by 16,000 citizens.
The petitions called on Snyder to reject plans to eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit. They were circulated statewide by Michigan Citizen Action, a progressive concerned with social and economic issues.
"The Earned Income Tax Credit helps low-income families by rewarding work and helping them get out of poverty," Erin Knott, deputy director of Michigan Citizen Action, said in a press release. "Instead of doing the right thing and supporting families who work hard and play by the rules, Lansing politicians want to get rid of what President Ronald Reagan called the best tool to get families out of poverty.
"This is immoral and Michigan citizens are making their opposition to this injustice clear by signing this petition."
