Ensign to Resign
Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 05:03 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
Source: Roll Call

Sen. John Ensign will announce as soon as tomorrow that he plans to resign from the Senate, according to a well-placed source.

The Nevada Republican announced earlier this year that he would not run for re-election in 2012 saying “there are consequences to sin,” referring to an extramaritial affair he admitted having with the wife of his former top aide.

A request for comment left for Ensign’s spokeswoman, Jennifer Cooper, was not immediately returned.

28. Yes, Governor Sandoval will probably appoint Rep. Dean Heller.
And Heller would then run in 2012. He would give the GOP an incumbent in that race and politically it is probably bad news for the Democrats.

13. He is resigning now to give Sharon Angle a better shot
Since Gov. Sandoval is a Republican, he is likely to appoint Angle as Senator to serve out Ensign's term. The thinking is that it will be harder for a Democrat to unseat her, once she is in office.

They have to have a special election for the House seat, it's in the Constitution. I bet Sandoval and the honchos of the Republican party are looking hard for someone who can beat Angle in a Primary.

37. There will be no special election - Angle, the idiot, holds no public office
Her track record as a State Assemblyperson was abysmal at best. She was impossible to work with, according to colleagues on her side of the aisle. Sandoval knows this.

A moire likely choice is Rep. Dean Heller. Heller is a conservative but not a certified cut case like Angle.

... might be considered as he is a decent Republican moderate. At least I know some people who know him personally as a decent person that are hoping that he gets the appointment, since as Republicans he's a pretty good fellow and not a "fake" moderate like we're so used to with Republicans these days.

He's currently running for Heller's house seat in Nevada that Angle is also running for...

19. Can you say indictment?

Why Sen. Ensign should be worried about possible indictment

By Jon Ralston

Sunday, April 4, 2010 | 2 a.m.

In the federal penal code, it is known as “structuring.”

And it is a word Sen. John Ensign should remember because it is very likely to be on any indictment with his name on it.

That’s what I am told by a reliable source familiar with the deliberations occurring inside the Justice Department as federal authorities in Washington try to do with Ensign what they could not do with former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens: Get their man. Or, because they had Stevens and then lost him because of misconduct, Justice wants to make sure if it goes to the next step with Ensign, the charges stick.

Structuring is a broad term that refers to the crime of creating financial transactions to evade reporting requirements — for example, a $96,000 payment to your mistress laundered through a trust controlled by your parents and calling it a “gift” instead of what it obviously was: a severance payment that had to be reported.

18. It serves two purposes
Firstly, it will probably keep this asshole out of prison for paying off the other parties. After all this is Wash-ington where if you leave all charges are dropped.
It also gives the new appointee time to use the perks of office like franking and news exposure to campaign. So it is not good news at all.

26. JOHN ENSIGN TO RESIGN, HELLER LIKELY REPLACEMENT (formal announcement)
Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 07:47 PM by brooklynite
Source: Las Vegas Sun

WASHINGTON -- Embattled Sen. John Ensign announced this afternoon he will resign from office, effective May 3. The move opens the door for Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval to appoint Rep. Dean Heller to finish out the term.

"It is with tremendous sadness that I officially hand over the Senate seat that I have held for eleven years," Ensign said in a statement. "The turbulence of these last few years is greatly surpassed by the incredible privilege that I feel to have been entrusted to serve the people of Nevada. I can honestly say that being a United States Senator has been the honor of my life."

Sun columnist Jon Ralston first reported earlier in the afternoon that Ensign would step down.

If Heller is appointed, it would give him a strategic leg up as an incumbent against his presumed opponent in the 2012 Senate race, Democrat Rep. Shelley Berkley. Berkley is still expected to run.

A timeline of major events leading to resignation of Nevada US Sen. John Ensign

July 14, 2009 — Ensign says he has no plans to resign and intends to seek re-election in 2012.

August 2009 — Ensign gets mixed reviews during two days of carefully scripted appearances in Nevada — his first since announcing the affair. He promises a Republican women’s club in Fernley that he’ll make up for his “big mistake” by working harder than ever. He makes stops in later weeks in Henderson, Las Vegas, Elko, Alamo and Lovelock.

Aug. 19, 2009 — Ensign tells The Associated Press: “I haven’t done anything legally wrong.”

October 2009 — New York Times reports Hamptons sought $8.5 million settlement from Ensign before the affair became public.
