Acclaimed Historian Douglas Brinkley Calls For NBC To Dump Trump, Corporate Sponsors To Pull Ads

Moments ago on CNN, acclaimed historian and author Douglas Brinkley pinned the blame for the reemergence of birtherism on NBC Entertainment for giving real estate mogul Donald Trump a primetime platform. Brinkley called on NBC to immediately drop Trump’s show, The Apprentice, from its lineup. If NBC decides to keep Trump on the air, Brinkley called on corporate sponsors to pull their ads or face a massive consumer boycotts:

*****We don’t have to blame “the media” for dealing with this issue. We have to blame NBC Entertainment. They need to dump Trump from his primetime news show. He’s a poison toad on the airwaves. What corporate sponsor is going to be buying ad time for Donald Trump’s show. Any company that goes into Trump and is willing to pay is going to find consumer boycott like they’ve never seen before. If you are going to do what Trump did and go after the President of the United States in such a grotesque and disingenuous way you better cough up the goods. Today the Obama administration has shown what a charlatan Donald Trump really is.

I have teenagers, so I hear them playing in other rooms, and they all sound the same. A bunch of entitled, arrogant, disgruntled, nobody attention whores, trying to screw everyone around them.

66. I gave up TV altogether years ago.. thankfully.
Damn thing was making me angry all the time. Couldn't take it anymore. Dropped my cable subscription and put all my TVs in storage. I quit reading the damn newspapers too. For the same reason. I got sick of being manipulated all the time. Feel so much better now. Really. There's lots of great old movies to watch on Internet Archive.. and Itunes has rental movies for 99 cents. I get all my news from good alternate news sites on the internet. My blood pressure is down to normal now. Yay!:)

That was back in the 50s. Now, TV has become Ex-Lax for the intellect. Between the Kardashians and Trump, I can't watch commercial TV, it's mutated into what Harlan Ellison called, "The Glass Teat". I feel like I'm losing IQ points each time I look at it!

2. Someone give me a list of who sponsers that crappy show and I'll boycott
Yesterday I was at a 7-11 and they had that Snapple Tea that was created by Bret Michaels for Donald Trump's "The Apprentice". A few weeks ago I would have bought it, I'm neither a fan of Trump or Bret Michaels, but it was really tasty tea.

When I pulled it out of the fridge yesterday I saw Trumps face on the bottle and I put it back.

Nothing is that good when it comes from a racist asshole.

26. Just emailed Groupon
I have two groupons sitting out there and am a regular purchaser of their deals. I let them know I would spend my money with companies who have ethical standards and do not align themselves with anti-American birther retoric such as Donald Trump spews.

I also let them know I have a LARGE network of friends and I will spread the word. I hope they do the right thing.

Annette

ps thanks for the listing of companies - will boycott each and every one of them!

Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 07:24 PM by JohnnyRingo
Though it's a snappy slogan, what Trump did goes way beyond anything that has ever happened on Glenn Beck's sound stage. Trump used his credentials as an American businessman to subvert the president of the United States.

He knew it was slander, we knew it, and now the country knows it. Regardless of Trump's preening after he was caught, he has been backed into a corner that paints him at once as a racist and an unpatriotic egocentric kook. Obama essentially came out today and said "Trump, you're fired".

Who in their right mind would now buy stock in Donald Trump's future? What company wants potential customers to think of Donald Trump when they buy their products?

On edit: I don't know what decision NBC made today about the growing albotross about their neck, but I would bet the farm that there was a meeting to discuss it.

the entire media gave trump credence with this crap.
brinkley has something else on his plate - maybe an msnbc take down
why are we here online - because mainstream media is crap - all of them and all the soulless powdered faces onscreen
the entire alphabet soup from abc to cnn is only corporate sponsored infotainment
the fact that the birther controversy could generate more press attention than norad being preoccupied on 9/11 must show you that investigative journalism is long dead
we are all witnessing the death of empire and the 4th estate gives us birth certificates

100. So, because MSNBC, which is the cable news outlet for NBC,
no one is allowed to question anything that happens in the entire corporate network. (NBC actually also has its own network news.) The fact is that Trump has gone too far. In fact, MSNBC itself has given Trump a huge amount of time - even when they disagreed on this issue.

It is disgusting that you are making this an issue of one network over another. I have seen Brinkley on many networks - including MSNBC. He was a frequent guest on Imus' show, which for all the host's flaws was better and fairer than Morning Joe.

109. I agree hourglass1.
The fact that the birther garbage was even allowed to gain tracttion at all is a reflection of the poor state of our media. If there was any integrity left the birthers would have been condemned as kooks in the very beginning. It takes less than five minutes to pull up the section of the constitution dealing with citizenship and even if their wild fantasy that Obama was born in Kenya were true he would still be a US citizen because his mother was a US citizen.

USC 14th amendment

1401. Nationals and citizens of United States at birth

The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:
(a) a person born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof;
(b) a person born in the United States to a member of an Indian, Eskimo, Aleutian, or other aboriginal tribe: Provided, That the granting of citizenship under this subsection shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of such person to tribal or other property;
(c) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents both of whom are citizens of the United States and one of whom has had a residence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions, prior to the birth of such person;
(d) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year prior to the birth of such person, and the other of whom is a national, but not a citizen of the United States;
(e) a person born in an outlying possession of the United States of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year at any time prior to the birth of such person;
(f) a person of unknown parentage found in the United States while under the age of five years, until shown, prior to his attaining the age of twenty-one years, not to have been born in the United States;
(g) a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than five years, at least two of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years: Provided, That any periods of honorable service in the Armed Forces of the United States, or periods of employment with the United States Government or with an international organization as that term is defined in section 288 of title 22 by such citizen parent, or any periods during which such citizen parent is physically present abroad as the dependent unmarried son or daughter and a member of the household of a person
(A) honorably serving with the Armed Forces of the United States, or
(B) employed by the United States Government or an international organization as defined in section 288 of title 22, may be included in order to satisfy the physical-presence requirement of this paragraph. This proviso shall be applicable to persons born on or after December 24, 1952, to the same extent as if it had become effective in its present form on that date; and
(h) a person born before noon (Eastern Standard Time) May 24, 1934, outside the limits and jurisdiction of the United States of an alien father and a mother who is a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, had resided in the United States.

Trump just rid the Repubs of one of their cash cows, the birther issue.

Now, they'll have to pay those think tanks and pollsters overtime money.

Will the low-education voters be motivated by the not knowing the grades of a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard? What does that mean, anyway? I hear it's like saying you're second string. Maybe affirmative action is used to get one onto the Harvard Law Review. Many a Repub will have to check and get back to Charlie later.

He called out NBC execs several times. If you missed it, be sure to catch the replay at 11.

68. As a historian, he is suppose to seem neutral
From Tour of Duty, he liked, respected and was impressed by John Kerry. Given Kerry's 1971 protests, I doubt many conservatives would even consider writing a book of the part of the Vietnam war that Kerry took part in - partially using the journals that kerry was known to have kept - at least through that part of his life.

60. Have any national Democrats come out in support of this?
And before anyone strains themselves to come up with an excuse for why they should not- I recall that several high profile Republicans successfully called for the firing of Dan Rather and they suffered little or no negative consequences as a result.

Seems like it should be the next step in the game- to have high profile DEMS comparing this to the "Dan Rather" firing, challenging Republicans to explain why it is not the same, asking who should be fired using the "Rather Standard" etc.

And to whom it may concern- dont mistake this for "DEM bashing"-Just b/c I know DEMS will never do this does not mean they shouldnt, and it does not mean that we should not at least TRY to come up with even more WAYS for DEMS to fight Republicans...

86. No one has mentioned GE. Write to them. I'm prous to say that I haven't
puchased a GE product for about 15 or 16 years - ever since they conspired with all the other corporation networks to take down the Clintons. That's about when they added MSNBC - 24/7 with repeats that were all anti-Democrat and anti-Clintons with a vengeance. So smug, so arrogant, so organized, so orchestrated, so coordinated. That was about the time you would see CNN hobnobing with CBS - they they all became one. No differences except with their host celebrities. Guest expert appearances exploded. Some of them probably spent about five nights a week rotating appearances - a deficiency of their family values unless they were only scheduled for the afternoon shows They powdered up then yapped. Endless attacks.

So I gave up tv about four years ago. I see a small per cent of the recommended segments on youtube to keep up.

89. This could backfire
Those who believe the revealed long-form birth certificate is fake would start saying, "See? We told you so!" Those on the fence might be tempted to say, "Hmmm? Why DID they fire Trump? Was he really on to something they didn't want him to talk about?"

Better to let Mr. Trump stay out front with his goofy hairdo and let the rest of us continue to laugh at him. Now that the birth certificate is out there, the whole "birther" issue will soon die down and go away, and "the Donald" will be about as relevant to the national political scene as Paris Hilton.

Does NBC really need this type of publicity with the Donald? I too am happy to say I have never watched the fighting on his show, nor do I watch any of those type of shows. Just takes money from Union SAG members.

106. Lawrence O'Donnell was on fire last night.
He hit the nail on the head. All NBC has to do is announce that celebrity apprentice is coming back next year and trump will have to shut up. And all the stupid republikochs will have to wonder why they believed he would run and win. Then again, they probably aren't smart enough to figure things out even after that.
