(PA) Mont Co. Sen. Mensch Cited in Gun-Related Road Rage Incident
Source: www.philly.com

State Sen. Bob Mensch (R., Montgomery) was cited in a case of apparent road rage on Interstate 78, the Pennsylvania State Police said in a press release made public today.

The Morning Call's Capitol Ideas reports troopers pulled Mensch over in the highway's eastbound lane on March 9 after a passing motorist spotted him "displaying a black-colored handgun and it in his right hand."

Mensch admitted to having two handguns in the car, but said he did not aim them at anyone. After questioning, he was cited for disorderly conduct.

Mensch told the Morning Call he'd felt threatened by the other motorist and was acting to protect himself.

13. That was my first thought too.
For those DUers who don't speak Yiddish or German, and who haven't started googling, mensch is the Yiddish for a person who is the soul of decency (Paul Wellstone was a mensch) and the German for human being.

5. First the "Castle Doctrine", now the "Chariot Doctrine"?
Can't wait until some gang-banger uses this as precedent in a court case.

It's a wonder that (R)a aren't the majority in this country. The implied-immunity-from-prosecution alone would be worth it.

7. Oh yeah because he has an R behind his name let's convict him now
"When I say tailgaiting, I couldn't see his grille in my mirror" for a couple miles," said Mensch, who changed lanes, slowed down, and then drove the speed limit of 65 mph. He said the other driver continued tailgating.

Mensch said he then pulled into a gas station because he was on empty. He said the driver continued to follow him.

Asked if he felt threatened by the other driver, Mensch said, "I didn't feel comfortable."

-----

"I know the power of a gun," said Mensch. "I don't take them lightly. I've never done anything wrong in my life. I'm extremely frustrated. More will come out at the hearing."

He denies he displayed the gun, but I may side with him for having it accessible if he's being followed by some tailgating jerk who may be out to do him harm.

8. Uhhh, there's always the POLICE
Remember them? The people who's JOB it is to protect citizens?

And being a STATE SENATOR, he would have been GUARANTEED swift and sure service from police.

NO non-law enforcement people should be threatening other drivers with firearms.

9. You're out on an interstate and you call the cops
Edited on Sat Apr-30-11 10:42 PM by RamboLiberal
And how long will they take to arrive? Meanwhile what happens if that guy who's in a road rage incident with you now parked behind you at gas station decides to come out with his firearm? What the hell is wrong with having your own firearm accessible till the cops arrive?

I don't know about that section of my state but in my area on the interstates I've often driven 50+ miles without seeing a trooper.

10. H'mmm this one is getting a bit strange
State Sen. Bob Mensch said the man he's accused of displaying a gun to while driving on Interstate 78 in March was harassing him, and did so a second time a week later on the same stretch of highway.

Mensch, a 65-year-old Republican from Montgomery County, said the man tailgated his gold Chevy Trailblazer for miles both times and has him so worried about future encounters that he now takes a 30-minute detour on an alternate route home from Harrisburg.

"The week after the first incident, I look in the mirror and there he is again — the same guy," Mensch said. "I speed up, slow down, and still he just tailgates me. I'm not the one who should be charged here."
