All Headline Newshe Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended inspection of food companies and restaurants. Reports said that CFIA officials sent a memo that all net quantity verification activities are deferred for 2011-12.

The agency is tasked with ensuring that Canadian consumers are not sold inferior products or served food with exaggerated nutritional claims.
But the CFIA will continue to check the accuracy of nutritional claims on certain types of food, including sugar- and fat-related claims for juice and candy products. However, the agency’s restaurant menu verification program has been removed.

The Conservative-led government promised to spend $100 million more over the next five years to improve the CFIA’s food inspection mandate before the federal government was defeated in March. One of the campaign issues promised by all five political parties to Canadian voters is to improve food safety across Canada.
