Agency suspends inspection of Canadian food companies, restaurants
Source: All Headline News

he Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended inspection of food companies and restaurants. Reports said that CFIA officials sent a memo that all net quantity verification activities are deferred for 2011-12.

The agency is tasked with ensuring that Canadian consumers are not sold inferior products or served food with exaggerated nutritional claims.

But the CFIA will continue to check the accuracy of nutritional claims on certain types of food, including sugar- and fat-related claims for juice and candy products. However, the agency’s restaurant menu verification program has been removed.

...

The Conservative-led government promised to spend $100 million more over the next five years to improve the CFIA’s food inspection mandate before the federal government was defeated in March. One of the campaign issues promised by all five political parties to Canadian voters is to improve food safety across Canada.

1. Conservatives advocate spending more to better regulate a private industry for public safety?!?!
Obviously, these are real conservatives, not U.S. neo-cons whose mission is to enrich the rich and deprive the rest. Almost sounds like what we call "liberal" in the US. Only, our liberal politicians simply pay lip service to this type of policy and then wring their hands and say, "those nasty republicans won't let us help you, so we're just going to ask the private companies to police themselves and we'll give them a big tax break to encourage them to really do it."

We live in backwards-world.
