There were no initial reports of casualties or damage, according to the Geosciences Institute at the University of Panama.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 3.19 a.m., was located in the Pacific Ocean 179 kilometers south of the city of David, near the border with Costa Rica, according to the US Geological Survey.

USGS downgraded the temblor slightly from an earlier 6.1 reading.
