Rep. Eric Cantor: Spending cuts in exchange for Missouri tornado aid
Source: The State Column

Virginia U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor said Tuesday that any spending costs associated with federal disaster funding for Joplin, Missouri, tornado victims must be offset with spending cuts.

The Virginia Republican said “if there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental.”

The House Republican leader is the first to push for spending cuts related to the disaster that has already claimed over 100 lives. Democrats slammed the Republican leader, saying it amounted to “ransom.”

Rep. Billy Long, who represents the district impacted by the disaster, said Tuesday that he is pushing for federal emergency funding. It remains unclear whether he supports Mr. Cantor’s call for spending cuts.

But, of course, repealing tax cuts or tax breaks to oil companies is off the table. I guess the Republicans are using the tornado as leverage to push their efforts to privitize Medicare. Will Republicans be held accountable?

8. Poverty in John Boehner's District

For forty years, Tina Osso has worked on food and poverty issues serving nearly all of speaker John Boehner’s 8th Congressional District of Ohio. She came to that work in 1973, when the oil embargo resulted in her losing her job, and she unexpectedly found herself in line at a food pantry, where she began volunteering.

Ten years later, she founded the Shared Harvest Foodbank where she still serves as executive director today. The food bank distributes food to pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nutrition programs for seniors and children, and operates antipoverty programs as well.
Osso describes herself as “an aging hippie, a political activist and a stand-up comedian wannabe, trying her best to do the right thing at the right time.” But among her colleagues she’s earned a reputation as “a longtime people’s advocate,” according to Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks in Columbus.

efficient automobiles.

The Appropriations panel approved the measure by voice vote as an amendment to a measure funding the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other Department of Homeland Security programs for the 2012 fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

The disaster aid package would be financed by a $1.5 billion cut from a loan program to encourage the production of fuel-efficient vehicles. That means the new spending wouldn't add to out-of-control budget deficits.

25. A GOP House Leader Threatening To Kill Aide To Tornado Victims Is Not LBN?
Eric Cantor is not some backbencher. He is the #2 Republican in the House behind Boehner.

5. I wonder how many votes
for the GOP Cantor lost with this mean spirited pronouncement. Does he really think the voters in MO or in any other state that gets hit with natural disasters are going to be ammenable to this?

It isn't the time to be a bully when people are hurting.

Is there any chance this toad can lose in 2012? Is he that popular in VA?

There's always a chance, but that depends on how much support the Democratic Party is willing to give.

19. Voting Machines
The folks down at our friendly electronic voting machine companies added a new subroutine called restore_cantor_votes(). It figures any losses in repig votes due to cantor's actions, and adds them to the other Dem votes that were already going to be switched with existing software.

11. Here is my dream
Next year we not only keep the WH, add new seats to the senate, but we also take back the house and we get Boehner's seat, Cantor's, Ryan's, and throw in Bachmann's as well! I would be a very happy person if that happened!

14. That's some AWFULLY high steppin', but....
Edited on Thu May-26-11 10:54 AM by Plucketeer
...if these idiots keep flailing their constituents in the interests of their wealthy masters - there just might be a chance for it to happen! One can hope! :kick:

Edit: I predicted that the GOP's retaking of the house last year MIGHT prove their undoing. They might have gotten JUST ENOUGH rope to hang themselves with! And while it's a bit too early to predict their swinging, they're doing a great job of fashioning nooses for themselves.

15. The heartland!
Edited on Thu May-26-11 10:56 AM by AlbertCat
Ahhhh.... those folks who vote GOP idiots in and cry "keep the government out of my life!" all the time.

Well, I guess us coastal populated states will again bail out and subsidize those big empty "Heartland" states again. And why not... because we are one country, and we should help each other. But it's so annoying to help people who don't know who is helping them and pretend to not want or need the help.

Maybe Cantor can "cut" his salary to balance things out.

It helps dictatorships that are friendly to U.S. business/political interests.
