Reno: Nothing kept FBI from sharing info
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Contradicting her successor, former Attorney General Janet Reno said Wednesday that nothing prevented the sharing of FBI intelligence with criminal investigators working on counterterrorism.

Reno, speaking Wednesday at the University of Kentucky, took issue with Attorney General John Ashcroft's statement Tuesday that a legal restriction referred to as "the wall" prevented the FBI from sharing information with investigators.

"I know of nothing that would have prohibited, based on what I've seen, proper follow-up" in cases Ashcroft referred to, Reno said.

Reno and Ashcroft testified before the Sept. 11 Commission Tuesday in Washington. Ashcroft blamed Reno for issuing "draconian" guidelines in 1995 that he said made sharing information even more difficult.

1. Wow, Ashcroft lied. Who'da thunk? Fundie nutcase that he is.
Is there anything inherent in fundamentalism that makes people lie, or are lying degenerates just naturally drawn to extremism?

Actually, I know a lot of good fundamentalists. I think it's just Ashcroft. And the fact that he knows he was derelict in his job, and is trying to save his own butt.

3. One of the best AG's vs. one of the worst.....
I'd love to see Johnny Crisco doing the perp walk for his perjury before the commission. Hey, Crisco would come in handy after that. Well, why do you think they call it the "pokey"? (with apologies to the "Bob and Tom" show.)

4. She is absolutely right. I lot of people forget that there were very good
reasons why there was a preceived wall in the first place. It had to with both agencies abusing the law. The laws were mostly abused in the Reagan administration and probably even more in the Nixon administration. Even with the current law or Patroit Act there are guidelines that prevent the two agencies from communicating and cooperation on certain things. One agency is a law enforcement agency and one is a covert spy agency that by the consititution cannot perform certain acts within the US. That means there can never be a seemless cooperation between the two and natural conflicts.

5. From Bakersfield even
That is the heart of republican land right there. I am honestly surprised that they would even let that into their paper. In the book by Richard Clarke he brings this up repeatedly. Freeh was looking at everything else, Ashcroft was busy canceling funds to combat terrorism.

It was brought up in a State Dem meet-up tonight that they should not say the Bush administration let 9/11 happen. It should be pushed that it was going to happen but Gore would have made them work their butt off to do it, Bush did nothing to impede their progress. I thought it was an interesting idea to say the least.
