U-M finds more substance abuse in teens who slept
badly as toddlers

Thursday, April 15, 2004

BY TRACY DAVIS
News Staff Reporter

Young teens who had trouble sleeping as toddlers are twice
as likely to use drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, a new University
of Michigan study released Wednesday found.

The
relationship
between
poor sleep
habits and
early
substance
use
remained
solid even
after
researchers
controlled
for
depression,
aggression,
attention
problems and parental alcoholism.

"It appears to indicate some shared neurobiological
dysfunction whose details we don't yet know," said senior
author and U-M Addiction Research Center director Robert
Zucker.

From the title I was hoping they'd found the cause of my insomnia.

4. Self-medicating
You know how much doctors hate that. Only they get to decide, and only their harsh addictive sleep aids will do.

9. This is a horribly written story.
The bad writing makes me question the validity of the study. What do they mean by "trouble" sleeping. Do they mean getting to sleep, staying asleep, depth of sleep, duration of REM sleep? What!? How was the study conducted? What were the influences on the control group? How long did the researchers follow the study group (years)? Did they consider other factors in their findings?

This story tells me squat - other than suggest that I be paranoid about my child's sleeping habits. It appears that this report may have been issued before the research was complete.

So there.

10. It sounds to me like Bush-admin anti-drug funded research
Universities are desperate for grant money. A lot of grant money under Bushco is being directed into ideological routes, including anti-drug (not alcohol or tobacco, of course, just "the bad stuff") and abstinence-only education.

This could be a good study with a legitimate finding. There is too little information to tell. At the end the article says they have applied for more grant money to conduct additional research.

11. Something about night people maybe
They just like the extra stimulation. Probably night people didn't sleep well as toddlers either.
