Syria Says U.S. Asked for Help With Iraq
DAMASCUS, Syria - Secretary of State Colin Powell has asked Syria's president to help in stabilizing Iraq, Syria's official news agency said Thursday.

The request came in a letter from Powell to President Bashar Assad, congratulating him on Syria's Independence Day, which falls on April 17.

The letter from Powell — and a separate congratulatory letter from President Bush — were delivered by U.S. Ambassador Margaret Scobey during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa.

Powell's message "explains the dangers of the developments in Iraq" and urges Syria "to give any possible help that could contribute to easing the situation there in a way that serves the country's unity and preserves its security and stability," SANA said.

The agency did not say what Bush's message contained.

1. gee, asking for help from our "enemies" now
Bushco is desperate.

Maybe they're saying "you know, we talked about invading you, but now we realize that maybe you can help us instead! "

Like THAT's gonna work

15. More recent than last summer
Just last month, the US was being very aggressive with Syria. This is very interesting indeed. And last week it was reported that bushco was leaning hard on Pakistan to send troops. Ahhh... democracy - Middle East style - in action. They must be rolling in the isles in Damascus.

Funny how Saudi Arabia is never included in these things. That kinda tells us which end of the stick we're holding when it comes to the Saudis. I sure would like to see that RAND report from the first year of the bushco admin. It reportedly stated that the US should treat Saudi Arabia as an enemy and strategic threat, not as an ally. Shrub repudiated the report and covered it up, and that's the last we heard of it.

3. A little weird that we have to learn this from Syria?
Our chimp-president gave a news conference the other night. You'd think he'd mention that we were asking for help from one of his so-called "axis of evil" powers.

But no. We learn it from the axis of evil itself. How moronic. How stupid. How embarrassing. How incredibly inept.

Arrrrgh!

8. Could you help us invade Iraq, please?
After we are done, we will invade you as well. Thanks in advance, Your friends, Bushco

I know the scale of the parties is all wrong, but I recall Ribbentrop cut a deal with Molotov in August 1939, to cut up Poland. Syria should think hard about this historical example, before cooperating with BFEE.

9. Something tells me that Syria will be skeptical.
Somebody needs to take chimpster aside and whisper, "Syria is not our friend. Remember?"

It's just another embarrassing blunder brought to us by the evil chimp.

12. Heck yeah!!! Syria not only knows it's a PNAC target,...
,...it, as do pretty much most other countries around this globe, KNOWS it cannot trust these freon neocons.

Geez, our imperialists probably "promised" that Syria could keep its sovereignty if they just cooperate. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

10. Typical: They need help but are afraid to tell anyone
What? Are they afraid the world might think that they're chicken? Or weak? Isn't that the same tactic that Saddam used to try to bluff his enemies into believing that he was more powerful than he really was?

17. Dear Syria, Please help!
Then bend over. No KY!

These clowns cannot be serious. Syria is on the PNAC list, and the PNACers are still running this show (Colin Powell's letter notwithstanding). They want Syria to help Bu$h's re-"election," so that he and his corrupt cabal can invade them next. Too rich!

19. Yep. Because within a year Bu$hco will be O-U-T!
Kerry will lean heavily on Clinton's experience, in the early months. Low-key, probably, not that it matters. Hell, Hillary might just be VP!

21. Well it goes to show you
when it comes to diplomacy or negotiations, or even maintaining who your friends are & who your enemies are, these guys haven't a clue.

They don't know how to nurture their friends. They don't know how to be consistent with their enemies. They just threw them all in the blender and treat them all the same: with confusing inconsistency.

And yes, I believe you're right: next they will be calling Kim Jong Il to see if he would like to contribute troops to Iraq.

Madeline Albright said it best when she described the transition from Clinton to Bush: "they took the cards we had set up and pushed them off the table".

23. Junior sure is searching around lately for help from anywhere?
.
.
.

Let's see - Last week Bush called South Korea, Japan. Salvador and Poland to confirm their commitment. Cheney went to Japan and Korea " to urge Japan and South Korea to stick with the coalition despite kidnappings of their citizens in Iraq". They must have indicated second thoughts?

India said it is completely unrealistic for the US to think India can reconsider its stand," said a senior official, adding "Washington is usually never realistic but this is going too far".

Canada "pre-empted" and said NO before being asked

Spain announced it would withdraw it's troops June 30 unless the UN was overseeing operations (Junior won't even consider that..)

Bush called Putin last Thursday and Putin basically told him to forget it by saying resolve the conflicts through the United Nations.

Junior is just NOT getting the message.

The World does NOT support this war!
