Social drinking, alcoholism, harm brain equally: study
HITTING THE SAUCE: According to researchers, people who consume 100 drinks a month pay for it in damage to their balance, intelligence and memory

REUTERS , WASHINGTON
Friday, Apr 16, 2004,Page 7

Heavy social drinkers show a pattern of brain damage similar to that seen in hospitalized alcoholics -- enough to impair day-to-day functioning, US researchers said on Wednesday.

Brain scans show clear evidence of damage, and tests of reading, balance and other functions show people who drink more than 100 drinks a month have problems, the researchers said.

"Oftentimes alcoholics are the last ones to know they have a problem," said Dr. Peter Martin of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, who wrote a commentary on the report.

So Bush has publically admitted his alcohol abuse for 25 odd years. Tell me why the brain damage of alcolhol to his brain is NOT a National Security issue and NOT pertinent voter information? Why aren't candidates run through psychological testing? Why don't they have to take drug tests and occasional lie detector tests, since their in positions of National Security are higher than 'bus driver', 'Lockheed Martin employees', 'minor FBI/CIA agents'...

2. I was always a social drinker. . .
"I think I'll have a drink," a friend would say.

"Well, so shall I," I would reply.

4. 100 a month seems like a fair bit to me
Although, technically it could just be a glass of wine with lunch, supper, and in the evening. I am a bit suspicious about any drug research though, as everyone seems to have an agenda. I gather it is difficult to get funding for research if it doesn't have a drugs/alcohol are bad conclusion.

5. 100 fucking drinks a month is what this asshole calls social drinking
This asshole should have his medical license revoked if he tries to pull that shit. I drink 30 beers a month and that's plenty social in my book. It's "Reefer Madness" all over again.

6. 100 drinks a month?
that's at least 3 drinks a day. that's a pretty damn social drinker. sounds like social binge drinking. dear lord that's a whole hell of a lot of alcohol.

there are real dangers to drinking alcohol, but i don't know if it's fair to include 100 drinks a month in the category of social drinking. if i saw someone i knew doing that i'd think lush before i'd think social drinker. geez, it ain't the 1940s anymore, we aren't swimming in drinks before dessert. whew, poor livers!
