Arpaio plans to employ chain gang outside All-Star game
Source: The Arizona Republic

With a national TV audience of millions expected for baseball's All-Star Game,
Sheriff Joe Arpaio could not pass up the chance to promote two of his favorite topics:
himself and his disdain for undocumented immigrants.

A chain gang should do the trick, Arpaio decided.

A group of inmates from the sheriff's holding area for undocumented immigrants,
all of whom were convicted of DUI, will join American male and female chains of
DUI offenders to send a message about the perils of drunken driving when they
pick up trash outside Chase Field next week, Arpaio said.

If someone draws another message about the legal pitfalls of undocumented immigration,
all the better.

1. WI is using prison labor too ...
... now we know why the prison industrial complex was allowed to 'bloom' ... cheap and captive labor source to replace the rest of us.

2. Two-way street
I would expect a gigantic push back from Major League baseball players who have a large number of hispanic players. If the sheriff wants to put his prisoners on display like caged zoo animals, Hispanic groups should enlist MLB All Stars to condemn the publicity stunt and counter with PR efforts of their own.

3. To the chains...Just sit down!!!
...let's see if Commander Craphole will start whipping them to work.

And let the cameras roll on that.

18. It's a volunteer work duty.
If they fuss, they won't be allowed to volunteer in the future.... they'll just be stuck inside for that much longer.

4. I hardly think the MLB will want to have chain gangs around
patron or visible on air at 'America's Game'.

It really doesn't support their image very well.

5. Arpaio's record for reducing crime sucks
Since sheriff joe took over crime has increased in his county
while it has decreased in surround counties and
municipalities. I presume he is elected. Since he is making
the crime situation worse, why do people re-elect him.

9. Yes he is elected.
Because the majority of voters in Maricopa County truly believe that he's doing a wonderful job keeping out the illegals, sort of like how a child truly believes in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny!

The difference being that children grow up, the voters of Maricopa County, not so much!!!

10. In this case, it is alright for the citizens of the county to pay for liabilities
due to misconduct by Arpaio's thugs. Let Maricopa County go bankrupt or become unable to be insured.

16. That's not the reason. They don't give a rat's ass about crime rates.
What they care about is, he is causing misery to the "inferiors" they hate, and that gives them boners.

I know how that sort thinks.

6. Looks like we have a failure to communicate
Maybe some enterprising DUers will show up the day before and
clean up the place. It would be hard for Cononal Klink Arpio
to put on his forced labor camp theater when there's no labor
to do. If someone draws another message about the pitfalls of
being a documented racist, all the better.

8. What A Boost For Arizona's Image! Chain Gangs!
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 11:50 AM by Vogon_Glory
And Arizona's corporate suits thought that Russell Pearce's antics were an embarrassment to the state! What a boost for Arizona's image! Chain gangs! :sarcasm: If someone wanted to portray Arizona as a brutal, barbarous, Apartheid-style police state, broadcasting imagery of chain-ganged prisoners ought to do the trick. Arizona, epicenter for "Prison Planet" conservatism. :puke:

Arizona has already cemented its status as our first Nazi state.

15. Not Quite Yet, But It Will
I respectfully disagree with you. While most progressives and politically-aware people are quite aware of the antecedents and the consequences of such odious legislation as Arizona's SB 1070, a very LARGE chunk of the population is still as soundly politically asleep as they were back in 2000. I think the stills and videography will do wonders for demonstrating the racist nature of Arizona's immigrant-bashing campaigns to the snoozers in the middle and perhaps even a few good-hearted (but misguided) people on the right.

11. Why DUI people? Why not violent offenders....
make them got out in that brutal heat and work. Make the worst of the worst work....sell tickets! 'Watch a rapist pick up trash.'

I'm being :silly: But I guess DUI is the latest 'new hate.' Pedophiles and rapists should get some really tough work....or is the sheriff afraid they'll get away from him?

get prison time. Arpaio runs a jail. There is an important difference. Pretty much all crimes that call for 1 year or less in imprisonment are in his jail. He also houses pre-trial detainees.

The chain gain is actually a reward for good behavior. For the inmates it beats being stuck in a tiny pod with 3 or 4 other people or tent city.

On edit-I think my post may come across as defending Arpaio which I absolutely am not. Just explaining some things. He is obviously whoring for attention and is a constant self-promoter.

I've done time in AZ jail. This is volunteer work, a nice way to get out from behind the walls and get some fresh air.

They volunteer to pick up trash along the highways and they get extra time served for it.

I dont see anything wrong with it.

19. Of all things Arpaio does (and I disagree with quite a bit)
I don't have a problem with this. I do have a problem with him going to the All-Star game where the cameras are at just so he could self-promote himself as he constantly does with the Discovery channel show & A&E shows. He is such a media whore. If he was serious about this he would do this where there are no cameras.
