Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block a provision of the state budget that took away the organization’s funding. The lawsuit, filed today in Greensboro, argues that the defunding violates federal law and the organization’s constitutional rights.
Similar lawsuits have been filed in Indiana and Kansas.
“This budget provision, like in those other states, is contrary to federal law, impermissibly penalizes Planned Parenthood, and has the effect of restricting North Carolinians’ access to health care,” Planned Parenthood senior attorney Helene Krasnoff said in a statement the group released late this morning.
Planned Parenthood receives about $212,000 in federal and state grants and from local programs. The money is not used for abortions, but goes to preventative health care, including cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and teen pregnancy prevention.
