Kerry Hits Back at White House, Defends Patriotism
1 hour, 4 minutes ago

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - Democratic presidential challenger John Kerry (news - web sites), lashing out at the White House's "twisted sense of ethics and morality," accused Republicans on Friday of distorting his record and attacking his patriotism.

Kerry, at an outdoor rally on the University of Pittsburgh campus, used an American flag and the national anthem to fire back at Republicans who charge he is weak on defense for voting against some weapons systems and an $87 billion bill to pay for operations in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites).

Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, pointed out Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) and political adviser Karl Rove did not serve in the military.

"I'm tired of Karl Rove and Dick Cheney and a bunch of people who went out of their way to avoid their chance to serve when they had the chance," the Massachusetts senator said. "I'm not going to listen to them talk to me about patriotism."

1. Kerry needs to keep this issue front and center with his campaign ads.
The hypocrisy of AWOL Junior, Cheney, and Rove is disgusting and shameful.

Wake up America!

4. Kerry needs to seriously start attacking the administration like a DU-er
he said he'd take the fight to Bush every day in the primary...
so far i've been dissapointed to witness a slow, timid, effectiveless campaign...

i mean, a tour of college campuses??? hello!
those are the most informed, Democratic-voting block out there!
it just seems a little silly to me

13. Used to be
in some ways, also that is the base you FIRE UP early on

But colleges have a very "healthy" presence of the GOP... and we acutally need to retake them

As it were, just as the GOP assumes (they are in for a shock) that they own the military, we cannot assume that we own colleges

16. Disagree.
I'm sure college age students are a great demographic for Nader, so it's important for John to get out in front of them. They should be motivated to see a change in our government. Good move to dialogue with these people now while Bush is screwing up on his own.

6. Ugh.
"...used an American flag and the national anthem to fire back at Republicans who charge he is weak on defense..."

Is it to much to ask that we define our own issues? Patriotism is a bogus issue. Once you debate at that level, you've lost the debate.

12. I disagree disagree....
The flag is obviously "owned" by all Americans. To stoop to even discussing it is conceding the point. Imo, a complete waste of time. I submit that it would be more productive to define one's self than to waste one's time countering a phantom argument. If there are Americans who actually believe that Democrats are unpatriotic, they are unretrievable.

20. Such a distinction feeds upon itself ...
Why allow the NEGATIVE spin to develop in the minds of COUNTLESS straddlers ? ... Why should THEY believe, wrongly, that the flag BELONGS to Republicans ? .... Yet: you offer this without resistance ...

No: .. Its OUR damned flag, it is OUR cause that it defines ....

To hand the standard of governence to the ignoramuses who DENY freedoms ridicules the very notion of freedom: FUCK them ... it isnt THEIR flag to wave in strident hatred ... It is 'all of ours' indeed: yet when YOU deny it: it isnt yours anymore .....

I wont allow that ... and I know I am not alone ....

8. The Kerry campaign should buy thousands of flags...
and give them out at every single rally.

9. Dear Kerry, Take our ARMY OF ONE ad and shove it up Bush's...
Way to GO!

Apparently Bush is going to run an ad starting today that will call Kerry's support of the troops into question..

We offered our ARMY OF ONE ad to Kerry while in New Hampshire (where it ran on cable TV 3000 times during the primaries) if you haven't seen it here it is:

This is the flash movie:

http://www.takebackthemedia.com/onearmy.html

there's also a TV version that you can see on the Bush in 30 seconds MoveOn.org contest where we were one of 16 finalists out of 1600 entries..

Here's that link:

http://www.bushin30seconds.com/view/11_large.shtml

Kerry NEEDS to run this. Once again WE ARE OFFERING IT TO YOU, Mr Kerry..

Anyone got pull (I'm out of the political loop right now) let them know.

18. The second one - 30 second ad - was great.
Get rid of the first one - waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy tooooooooooooo looooooonng!

Got to be the worst ad I've ever seen so far.

Too preachy.

Too much information all at once.

Instantly forgettable.

A real channel changer.

Horrible.

The Bush administration walked into a shitstorm, there. They gave him a chance to show his strength. Pretty stupid of them.

19. What Goes Round Comes Round
How appropriate! And on top of it all, this accusation of pukes being unpatriotic is justified. They don't believe in welfare, therefore they don't believe in helping Americans. As for the a-holes that are poor or mid class and believe the unemployed are lazy, they are just a bunch of old time bullies that need to put down people that are already down. I call them all cowards!
