US summons Syrian ambassador over 'protest filming'

July 09 2011 Last updated at 01:24 GMT -

The US State Department has summoned Syria's ambassador after receiving reports of Syrian diplomats filming people protesting peacefully in the US.

Imad Mustapha was told of "a number of US concerns" involving embassy staff, the State Department said.

The US says it is also investigating reports that Damascus may have acted against protesters' families in Syria.

"We received reports that Syrian mission personnel under Ambassador Mustapha's authority have been conducting video and photographic surveillance of people participating in peaceful demonstrations in the United States," a spokesman told a White House press briefing on Friday.

1. I do hope Hillary had her tongue firmly planted in her cheek. We dare to chastise a foreign
government for something that is done in the US at every political event? The brazen hypocrisy is quite remarkable.

2. Good point. And isn't Syria still one of our "extraordinary" rendition partners?
Nonetheless, I'm not opposed to our complaining about it, if it has a chance of cutting down on any retaliation by the Syrians.

3. Here lies the big difference...
From the same article:

"We are also investigating reports that the Syrian government has sought retribution against Syrian family members for the actions of their relatives in the United States exercising their lawful rights in this country and will respond accordingly."

4. You mean like tapping pnones or extra security measures against them?
Or arresting them before a protest takes place. Yeah, we never do that. All that is propaganda against the FBI and DHS.

5. No, retribution against Syrian family members for the actions of their relatives in the US

...isn't the like that at all.

Have you seen the footage of what they've been doing to the child protesters in Syria? If that's what they do to kids, then the possibilities are endless of what horrific havoc they'll wreak in retribution on adult family members of said relatives.

My answer was no, it's not like that. The retributions in Syria have been/are/will be massively different.

These two are articles, not videos...

My point still stands, if that's what they do to kids, then the possibilities are endless of what horrific havoc they'll wreak in retribution on adult relatives of Syrians who are filmed protesting in the US.

We need more than just your memory for evidence that "the incident with the teenager is in question". By the way, there have been several children brutally and sadistically murdered, not just one.
