Conservative group backtracks on marriage pledge slavery language

A social conservative Iowa group has retracted language regarding slavery from the opening of a presidential candidates' pledge, amid a growing controversy over the document that Michele Bachmann had signed and Rick Santorum committed to.

The original "marriage vow" from the Family Leader, unveiled last week, included a line at the opening of its preamble, which suggested that black children born into slavery were better off in terms of family life than African-American kids born today.

"Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA?s first African-American President," read the preamble.

But this evening, amid growing questions aimed at Bachmann, Family Leader officials said they'd removed the slavery language from the preamble.

Since Michele Bachmann was happy to leap into their arms when this was included, will she 1) criticize them for backtracking from a "family values" principle, or 2) come to her senses and withdrawn her signature completely?

from his plantation, himself and the mother. Or kept his own offspring as a slave and will him or her to his white children, just like any piece of property in his estate.

And, as another poster pointed out, even if the master was not the father, the master broke up families by selling them away from each other, not to mention raping any women, whether or not she had jumped the broom with a fellow slave. (No other marriage ceremonies for slaves, so, by the lights of white folk at the time, everyone was having sex with the women outside marriage.)

So, the oath was bullshit in every possible respect.

Leave it to Rethugs to wax nostalgic about slavery, lying or oblivious every step of the way.

And signed by Bachman, a lawyer, who presumably studied laws, including the Constitution, and claims to know American history, even if her "words don't always come out right?"

many families were split up, as people were sold. The idea that one human being can own another is appalling enough, to attempt to "justify" any aspect of slavery is beyond the pale for anyone who claims to be a human being.

snatched out of its mother's arms and sold off to someone else, and if the mother or father complained, they'd be horse whipped and each of them sold off to others. As a matter of fact, slaves marriages did not have to be respected by white slave owners: meaning, a white man could rape a married black woman with impunity, because they didn't believe that the institution of marriage extended to slaves.
