No debt deal unless Republicans compromise, Obama says
Source: The Globe

President Barack Obama declared on Monday there would be no deal on raising the government's debt limit if Republicans won't compromise, and he said he would not sign a short-term extension — raising the stakes on volatile negotiations with the clock ticking toward an Aug. 2 deadline.

“I don't see a path to a deal if they don't budge. Period,” the president said in a challenge to his political opponents, accusing Republicans of having a “my way or the highway” posture.

Asked whether or not he would veto legislation temporarily increasing the debt ceiling, the president said: “I will not sign a 30-day, or 60-day, or 90-day extension.”

The president warned that failure to reach agreement could create another recession and throw millions of Americans out of work, painting a picture of catastrophe if a partisan stalemate is not broken and Congress fails to act. He criticized politicians who say the debt ceiling doesn't need to be raised.

“It's irresponsible. They know better,” Mr. Obama said.

1. Obama is doing exactly the right thing here.
And it's what I've been advocating for. I thought he should ask for a clean bill and I'm glad he did.

10. A clean bill?
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:20 PM by Liberalynn
Exactly when and how did he ask for a "clean bill? " A clean bill would be on the debt cieling alone, IMHO.

He admitted he is the one advocating bringing SS and Medicare cuts into this now. "So we can get all the hard decisions out of the way at once." All he's asking from them is to change a few "tax loopholes" not even tax increases.

11. I don't think I was clear
I mean the bit about no temporary solutions. He said that if they can't agree to something, he's not going to accept a temporary increase. And I think he's correct in doing that.

13. Thanks for the clarification
but I'd rather a temporary bill be passed rather than this crap stuff he is trying to sell us on.

12. They are not the ones who are having their SS and Medicare
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:25 PM by Liberalynn
"trimmed" to the point there will be nothing left.

They don't have a stake in this race so they can be cool, calm, and collected and praise Mr. Obama to the high heaven.

They won't be the ones living in poverty due to his endless concessions to the corporate fat cats.

18. Lovely how people start to accept lies and myths as truth.
Like how there are big cuts to Social Security and Medicare... except there aren't any such cuts. For all the screaming done on DU about how Obama is going to cave, he just did at a national press conference the exact opposite of everything people here thought he would--but no one here is willing to admit that they were proven wrong.

Keep patting yourselves and the President on the back. I am so happy for all that have enough money to live without fear. I don't. I'M GENUINELY SCARED but I guess I am not "entitled" to even feel that.

25. Hopefully to assuage some concerns,
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1478750&mesg_id=1478750

P.S., Of course you (and all) are 'entitled' to be scared. However, as I understand PrezO's intentions, 'cuts' would be of the administrative type, NOT to benefits.

20. He said he is " trimming"
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 01:43 PM by Liberalynn
i.e. cutting SS. This wasn't some media hound putting words into his mouth or some massive DU hallucination. It was from his mouth directly. Was he lying or maybe replaced by an alternate world Obama?

Im am sure to anyone who doesn't need it SS or Medicare any cut would be accetable as long as it makes Obama look good.

The only thing he denied: "TAX INCREASES he's just closing "Loopholes" there. He needs to reassure his real base about that ATTROCITY.

Enough is enough!!!!! The U.S. citizens need to WAKE up!!!!!!!! Stop drifting your hopes towards the "american dream"...the only ones living it are the ones who want YOU to pay their way!!!

This whole debate sounds like a sequel to DUMB AND DUMBER in the making.

Good luck Obama!! You are going to need it.

3. What isn't being spoken:
Republicans may be inclined to compromise but they can't get the minority faction of the Tea Party freshmen to vote on that compromise. If someone just singled out those individuals, pressure could be put on them to bend.

14. Obama need to insist
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 12:38 PM by creeksneakers2
that the Republicans vote on the package they want and pass the house with it. I wonder if the GOP would have the votes. They are all counting on Democrats to cave and provide them with political cover. How would the Republicans explain not having the votes?

Even if the GOP passed the house with their plan, the legislative process would be moved along, and Democrats would have the GOP votes on record to use in the next election.

The talks Obama keeps holding only encourage the GOP to think they'll get more out of the Democrats if the Republicans hold firm.

15. obama needs to say it again: nothing will get done if GOP listens to limbaugh
team limbaugh is the real GOP player here- not norquist, boehner, cantor, or mcconnel

limbaugh is threatening any republican who would compromise with dems and explains US will not default because it will have to continue to pay off the debt it owes and have to finally cut spending. hannity will repeat same message for 3 hours after that. and so on to tens of millions of americans.

that is the constituency that keeps the GOP in line, those are the dittohead teabaggers and the only reason that 10% has any power is because the left ignores the radio and by not reacting to teh radio where it all starts they end up reacting after it has been pounded into the ear holes of 50 mil a week and because no one gets in the blowhards faces many of those 50 mil and the people they influence believe the shit and the republican owned media has the luxury of giving the shit credibility.

21. Raise Taxes...Cut Spending
A great compromise would be to give the Democrats all the tax increases they want, and give the Republicans all the spending cuts they want.
