I’m in. I’m running for Congress.

I’m running because I promised Charlaina and Rick that I would. Charlaina called me a few weeks ago, from the hospital. She told me that her husband, Rick, was suffering from multiple organ failure – lungs, kidneys and liver.

Rick was 56 years old. That’s three years older than me.

Rick was a veteran. But the Veterans Administration wasn’t covering his hospital bills.

Rick had had a bad liver since he was 30, when he contracted hepatitis. No insurance company would go near him.

Every day Rick survived, his family owed several thousand dollars more to hospitals and doctors. And they had no way to pay it.

I told Charlaina how sorry I was. And I told her that I wasn’t in Congress anymore, so I wasn’t sure how I could help.

She said: “You can run again.”

“You are the only person who ever cared about people like us. Rick wants people in Congress who can’t be bought and sold. Rick wants you to run again.”

A dying man wants me to run for Congress. What exactly could I say?

I promised that I would run.

Rick died on June 30, 2011, at 5:55 p.m.

I’m keeping my promise. I’m in.

For the four million people in Florida who can’t see a doctor when they are sick, and the fifty million nationwide, I’m in.

For the 70% of all homeowners in Orlando who owe more than they own on their home, and the 25% nationwide who are “underwater,” and feel like they are drowning, I’m in.

For the six million Americans who haven’t worked in six months and are seeing their benefits running out, for the eight million more who are unemployed, and for the eight million on top of that who can find only part-time work, I’m in.

For the millions of parents who have absolutely no idea how to pay for a college education for their children, I’m in.

And for everyone who is appalled by the prospect that we may cut Social Security and Medicare benefits as we spend more than $150 billion a year on three unnecessary wars and almost $100 billion a year on the Bush tax cuts for the rich, I’m in.

That's how the system works. He will rely on money from trial lawyers and other politicos in order to pay for his campaign and that means looking the other way when it comes to their indiscretions.

Listen, if a progressive's entire reason for existence is to tear down the system that corrupts government, (and that means challenging crooked business owners and the unethical lawyers who hide their secrets,) then it would be a simple matter to identify a good progressive candidate. Simply put, he would have a record of taking on good ole boys in Central Florida. Does Grayson have that record? Not so that it's noticeable.

A citizen like Alan can NOT be set aside so long as he's willing to fight for us.

I too, would LOVE to see Alan (or even some other Dem) make a pass for the 2012 nomination - even if it was obvious that it couldn't succeed. Blind allegiance is as dumb as sticking your head in the sand (or someplace else).

I run a low cost clinic and don't have insurance myself due to pre-existing conditions. Sure, some here would say that I will be offered coverage in 2014, but of course I'm offered insurance now - I just can't afford $2000 per month with a $10,000 deductible. This year we have had to deal with several patient deaths that happened because they didn't go in and get checked when they first got sick because they couldn't afford it. And when it got so bad they HAD to get it checked, it was too late. The latest patient to die of a preventable and easily treatable disease (if it were caught early enough) was 1 29 year old mother of 3 young children.

I am so pissed off that I swear the next person who mouths off to me about freeloaders, or handouts, or ... will be eating out of a straw for the next 6 months. I am tired of this shit and I'm not going to take racism, or hate anymore.

If you help lead that fight, then that will be the best way to force a more progressive majority on the Supreme Court when we most need it now. Because Obama then will be forced to pick a decent progressive to keep his trump card to get elected in 2012 with his base. If he doesn't pick it, then it opens up that much more the door for a real progressive like yourself or others you might work on to do a third party challenge if he's exposed as someone that needs one then. I'd hope that he picks a progressive justice to replace Thomas to avoid such a battle, but in a way either way with that decision earlier than later we win. And you're one of the best to lead such a fight to do that and to put that story to the American people about what kind of choice the *people* need!

Maybe if we can get him replaced earlier enough, something can be done about Citizen's United ruling before 2012 election too to help us get you and more like you in congress as well!
