Phone hacking: Rupert Murdoch 'to face MPs'
Source: BBC

News Corporation boss Rupert Murdoch is expected to appear before a committee of MPs next week to answer questions about the phone hacking scandal.

Committee chairman John Whittingdale told the BBC he had been told Mr Murdoch would give evidence.

MPs had made a "polite request" for Mr Murdoch, his son James and Rebekah Brooks to attend a one-off hearing.

Meanwhile the government says it is to back a call for Mr Murdoch to withdraw his bid to fully takeover BSkyB.

2. The fix must really be in

From the BBC Live Feed:

1751: The situation is developing rapidly. Only half an hour after telling the BBC he understood Rebekah Brooks, Rupert Murdoch and his son, James, had accepted an invitation to attend a meeting of the Culture, Media and Sport committee, its chairman rows back slightly.

He says there is now "some confusion" over whether they will appear before the committee.

Curiouser and curiouser...
