House turns out lights on Barton's bulb bill

The House rejected a bill Tuesday aimed at repealing a slew of light bulb efficiency standards that conservatives have targeted as an egregious example of federal overreach.

The Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act, sponsored by Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), failed on a 233-193 vote, with a two-thirds majority needed for passage.

The vote fell mostly along party lines, but five Democrats voted in favor of the bill and 10 Republicans voted against the bill. One Republican voted "present."

The bill would have repealed provisions in a 2007 energy law requiring that traditional incandescent light bulbs be 30 percent more energy-efficient starting in 2012.

1. Does it really matter?
Because it never would have passed the Senate.

5. It's a stupid, trivial pursuit to ban incandescents
But if it makes them all feel greeny, well...

And repealing the ban was equally trivial, but if it makes them all feel patriotic....

God forbid we should address any serious national issues, like war, peace, jobs, health care, Rule of law and white collar fraud, etc.

8. Incandescents waste energy...
just one ton of CO2 equates to 102 gallons of gasoline. Some 330 million tons of CO2 per year will be saved by changing to more efficient light sources such as CFLs and LEDs...to me at least, that's hardly trivial.

9. They weren't banned, but must be more efficient--and the new incandescents comply nt
