Libyan Rebels Accused of Pillage and Beatings
Source: New York Times

"Rebels in the mountains in Libya’s west have looted and damaged four towns seized since last month from the forces of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, part of a series of abuses and apparent reprisals against suspected loyalists that have chased residents of these towns away, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

The looting included many businesses and at least two medical centers that, like the towns, are now deserted and bare.

Rebel fighters also beat people suspected of being loyalists and burned their homes, the organization said."

Once again the U.S. is on the side of Good. Or, not.

2. Not surprised if both sides are doing this

It's the Hatfields against the McCoys. What side you are on is mainly determined by kinship connections.

3. Tribal issues were inevitable.
The history of how Libya was formed as a country demonstrates that.

Some form of partition, which was mentioned in the early days of current events, maybe the best answer.

4. Yeah, but it's been far more tame than was originally thought.

I don't recall much uproar over it when Gaddafi's troops looted Brega and Ajdabiya and film attested to that fact as reported by Al Jazeera.

A partition is out of the question, it won't happen, Gaddafi will leave soon enough, it's just that he wants to end it with his own people having bitter feelings toward one another rather than ceding right away. He's a modern Robert E. Lee, if you will.

5. Maybe, but U.S. support is not. Neither is the bs we've been fed.

7. Libya: The West 'Ignoring Rebel War Crimes'
The regime has insisted the West is turning a blind eye to war crimes committed by rebels - and took Sky News to meet civilians who they say have fled to Tripoli.

We were taken to temporary accommodation on the outskirts of the capital, which used to house Chinese labourers working in the now collapsed construction industry.

The Chinese are long gone - and instead families who have come from the western mountains and the east of the country live here now.

We met sisters Abir and Raja who told us they had brought their sick mother to the capital for fear of persecution.
