GOP Sen. DeMint frowns on new Obama debt powers
Source: Associated Press

A Republican senator who helped foster the tea party movement is throwing cold water on a proposal by the Senate's GOP leader to give President Barack Obama new power to ask Congress to increase the government's borrowing limit.

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint tells CBS' "The Early Show" Wednesday that the idea from Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell isn't something he likes.

DeMint says "Republicans weren't elected last November to make it easier to spend and borrow and add to our debt."

* * *
Under McConnell's plan, Obama could request increases of up to $2.5 trillion in borrowing authority in three installments over the next year, as long as he simultaneously proposed spending cuts of greater size.

The Republicans continue to throw each other under the bus. First, Cantor throws Boehner under the Bus. Now, Demint throws McConnell under the bus. How amazingly dysfunctional when you simply can't reach an agreement with any Republican without another Republican ready to toss you under the bus. Heck, look at how Republicans walked away from a $4 trillion package to reduce the debt when Democrats called their bluff and said lets do it. Now, McConnell is trying to surrender and give President Obama the clean debt increase that he originally asked for, and is now getting ripped by DeMint.

This is not leadership or negotiating strategy. This is dysfunction and a failure to lead in the face of an impending default.

4. Refusing to raise the debt ceiling is one thing. Pouting about being asked to raise it is quite
another.

Gawd, these people are hopeless.

2. Idiot. The President has always had the power to ask Congress for whatever he wants to ask Congress
for.

Seriously, why are people like this running our country? I wouldn't even let them have dull scissors.

13. A kid like that visited my work last week
He was in a shopping cart. He kept looking at me like that as I tried to engage him.

Then my co-worker tried to engage him. He looked at my co-worker with beaming delight on his face.

Then he turned back to me with the big malevolent pout on his face.

He kept looking back and forth at each of us and changing from beaming delight to malevolent pout. It was great.

5. This controversy isn't about the Debt Ceiling. It's about the power struggle within the republican
party.

"Republicans weren't elected last November to make it easier to spend and borrow and add to our debt."

As a deductive logic premise, all Tea Party members are republicans but not all republicans are Tea Party members.

When Jim DeMint speaks about "republicans", he isn't speaking for all of them. The Tea Party is strong-arming non-members to do the bidding of the Tea Party and its sponsors.

8. "Republicans weren't elected last November to make it easier to spend and borrow and add to our debt
No Indeed they were not!

They were elected to end abortion, stop gay marriage and obstruct anything... anything at all.... that the black man in the White House proposes, thus stopping government from working. They were elected to keep any recovery from taking hold.

Sorry...I mean.... they were elected to create jobs jobs jobs!

11. They've painted themselves into a corner all right.
Rethugs thought they were pulling the strings on teabaggers when they first appeared on the scene, shortly after Obama's inauguration, when they organized them into screaming mobs at town halls. Now, their servants have become their masters. You have to tip-toe around the monster you created. For some reason, they're never grateful to their creators.

9. Frowns?
Demint's face is permanently frozen in an unpleasant expression. How can one differentiate one from another.

I am enjoying this show. It's interesting to see the Republicans splinter like this. They always seem to manage to walk and talk in solidarity, no matter how foolish the position.

This is a risky strategy. They are hoping Obama will fail and they can blame him, but if Obama is successful, it's going to be pretty hard to take any credit for it. Still they will try and enough fools out there will believe them.

18. DeMint
We can always depend on that
Creature to screw things up
worse than they already are.

No DeMint, republicans were Elected
last November, because you and people
like you leave them no other choice.

Don't flatter yourself and your Party
of religious fruitcakes thinking the
People agree with you. Voters have 2
choices in each Election, which means
no choice at all. Just the way you like
it.
