Ohio Senate passes statewide abortion limit
Source: Newsnet5

Posted: 3:13 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A bill banning abortions once a fetus can survive outside the womb has cleared the Ohio Senate and is on its way to Gov. John Kasich.

The Senate passed the bill 22-7 on the same day it emerged from the Senate Health Committee. The Ohio House passed the bill last month.

The measure prohibits an abortion after 20 weeks if a doctor finds the fetus to be viable. Exceptions would be made to save the mother's life, but not in cases of rape or incest or for mental health reasons. The bill adjusts a state law found unconstitutional in 1997.

Kasich has not said whether he will sign the measure. Spokesman Rob Nichols said the governor is anti-abortion and needs to review the bill.

2. Looks like future day care centers and diaper washers!
Possibly mental institutional care givers for women trapped here in this tea bagging nightmare!

15. Don't forget suicide counselors and undertakers.
The undertakers get it both ways, unwilling moms whose mental health drives them to suicide and moms whose physical health cannot withstand the rest of the pregnancy.

This law is a frickin' jobs goldmine!!111! Suck it, Democrats!

4. Sickos.
And there's no way I believe that a fetus born at 20, 21, 22, 23 or 24 weeks is truly 'viable.'

14. it says the doctor has to "test for viability" after 20 weeks
I don't even know how it's possible to determine that before birth. Unless there's a fatal fetal abnormality (which would mean non-viable).

16. Wouldn't one have to incubate and intubate the aborted fetus to see if it survives?

6. Religious Fanaticism and Government
the two should never be mixed, and that is exactly what this is. Not only do I think what they are doing is a crime against all women, but I think this is an afront to all our freedoms due to a small but well funded minority of nutcases.

10. Maybe, maybe not. Theres a chance that a limit like this could survive challenge.
Ohio could (and probably will) argue that a viable fetus could simply be induced and delivered, thereby preserving the mothers right to end her pregnancy. The Supreme Court has ruled that women have the right to end their pregnancies, but hasn't protected any particular method and actually upheld the legality of the 2003 PBA Ban Act.

Hopefully it will be struck down, but we can't just assume that it will.

19. The SCOTUS has steadily been eroding Roe v. Wade. O'Connor, for all her other faults,
at least tried to hold the line at endangering the health of the mother, but she's gone.

Any ideas? I wonder if anyone in Ohio is researching how to recall him or impeach him.

20. Republicans like doctors (who try to show their love for women), but hate lawyers. So, maybe
the joke should be modified for them.

(Lawyers know how to sue for violations of Constitutional and statutory rights, for defective products, etc. Bad lawyers!)

13. At 20 weeks and if viable, just deliver the fetus -
- instead of aborting it. The end result is the same = end of pregnancy.

23. It isn't about requiring it
But it does call their bluff... If they claim they somehow know the fetus is "viable" , then they (repugs) shouldn't have a problem with it being delivered at that point since they are claiming it will be able to survive outside the womb. and there would be no forced pregnancy.
