No charges filed in sagging-pants saga (Deshon Marman)
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(07-13) 09:54 PDT REDWOOD CITY --

A college football player from San Francisco who was thrown off an airplane in a dispute over his sagging pants will not face criminal charges, a prosecutor said today.

Deshon Marman, 20, was arrested by San Francisco police on suspicion of trespassing, battery and resisting arrest in connection with the June 15 incident on US Airways Flight 488 at San Francisco International Airport.

But in a statement today, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said no charges would be filed against Marman.

"While we believe the officers on scene acted appropriately and professionally during the over one hour that they were in contact with Mr. Marman and repeatedly attempted to resolve the situation without difficulty, and while Mr. Marman could have quickly obviated the need for further intervention, we do not believe that criminal charges are warranted in light of all the circumstances surrounding the incident," Wagstaffe said.

1. I'm normally against pants
but you do have to wear them in many public situations.

13. Odd. I remember you getting offended when a poster used "he" in
a post about you.

18. "He" presumes a gender.
I prefer to keep my gender non-specific.

2. Sagging pants of a 20 year old? Really? this is "Breaking News" where is
a little bit of rational judgement in which forum to post this in?

Recommending that this thread be just plain ABOLISHED for just plain irrelevance to the world and DU readers in particular!

I want those 3 minutes back for the time I wasted reading this link.

I hope my 2 minutes I spent writing this response will wake up the logical thought process of at least ONE DU poster here.

12. I think the story is a good example of creeping fascism.
the fact is, getting worked up over someone's pant-wearing style is silly; trying to charge them with a crime is fascism, and should be on the front page of a newspaper.

3. losing freedom should be big news.
I hate baggy pants. But I will stand next to the guy and help defend his right to wear them. Big news? It should be! Will it matter to you when they tell you what color your shirt has to be? Welcome to the police state. Thank you for posting.

4. This is actually "news"...in particular because
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 06:14 PM by SoapBox
there is still that guy that flies around on UseLessAir in women's panties and bra.

Why the HELL this guy was treated like this is beyond me! Ya, I HATE the baggy pant thing but...the FA and others involved
should be the ones to pay for all of this trouble and it's related costs.

And he is going to sue...good for him.

8. So the stripy shirt and eye mask is a bad move, then?
Seriously, 'dress like a criminal'? Is that the kind of thing you want DUers to see you saying?

9. You know where the baggy look comes from?
In prison, you don't get a belt.

Your pants hang down as a result.

The whole "pants hanging low" look comes from that, it's a social statement that you've been to prison, and don't care about your pants hanging low, because you're used to it now.

10. I know that it where it's said to come from; but are you really going to say
that what is now a general fashion thing is "dressing like a criminal"? When it's also probably more popular among young African Americans? And that those people following a fashion deserve to be treated shittily when they haven't done anything wrong?

11. "what is now a general fashion thing"?
I wore my trenchcoat, and black, and boots, before it was "criminal". I still wear it. I've even added a kilt to the usual outfit.

I don't expect to be treated any differently than others who share my fashion... it sends a signal, and I'm quite aware of the signals it sends.

I am treated differently because of it. I'm eyeballed, searched, inspected, and I'm well aware that this is a result of fashion.

I don't think I have ever seen a picture of Al Capone without a tie.

17. Won't be hearing much from Marman in the future of football.
Someone coming from a funeral who can't hitch up his pants for a 1 hour plane flight is too immature to learn big time football.

It's obvious where his priorities are, and having saggin' pants is obviously where it's at.
