The prisoner has identified himself as Keith Mathew Maupin

Aljazeera has aired videotape showing an American soldier held prisoner by an armed Iraqi group.

A spokesperson for the unidentified Iraqi resistance group said on the tape that the soldier was being "treated according to the Islamic way of treating prisoners of war".

He added that the group had arrested the soldiers in order to swap him with some of its hostages being held by the American occupying forces.

The videotape, received late on Friday, showed the captive dressed in US army uniform and surrounded by armed masked men. On the tape, the soldier identifies himself as Keith Mathew...

2. The situation could be worse...
I think this guy has a very good chance of making it home alive. The invocation of Islamic law re: treatment of prisoners is a very specific and calculated move. It says that they have the same respect for the Geneva Conventions as BushCo does, but that they will play nice because it is in their rules, not ours. They aren't threatening him, and they are seeking prisoner exchange. I think this guy's chances of living are VERY good, though he may not be released for quite a while--weeks or even months.

3. The same respect for the Geneva Conventions as BushCo?
You mean, us? The United States?

The same army who locked dozens of Afghanis in a cargo container with no water or bathroom and left in the sun for a day or two? The same army that puts black hoods over prisoner's heads? How are we treating Iraqi soldiers who are captured?

Easy, they get a dose of acute lead posioning... about 125gr or so at 2250fps in the back of the head.

BushCo has shown extreme contempt for the Geneva Convention in the past 2 years, it shows great class if the Iraquis can do better.

SOMETIMES NEEDING ENCOURAGEMENT

Note the Smiling guard’s admiring Stare at the soon to be covered model’s face. A bit of

8. Exactly...
They're claiming the moral high ground, while at the same time throwing a jab at the U.S., and building more support among fence-sitting Iraqis and Mid-Easterners. That's why I say it's calculated.

Another reason to hope this guy makes it--if he dies after the tape was made, the Army is going to go even more bat-shit than it did after the four mercs in Falluja got it. They would probably invade Najaf, which would unleash the rest of Sadr's Mahdi Army, and then we reach a whole new order of magnitude of FUBAR.

7. Got that right
The tape will keep him alive---- I praying the (AIC) assholes in charge figure out some way to exchange him.

We can't have it both ways. Either we have to treat them with respect of forfeit the moral high ground.

Oh--I'm sorry we never had the moral high ground
