Cheney, Powell Split Over Iraq, Book Says
Sat Apr 17, 2004 01:39 AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell are so upset with one another over the Iraq war that they are barely on speaking terms, according to excerpts from a new book published in the Washington Post on Saturday.

snip

"Powell felt Cheney and his allies -- his chief aide, I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz and Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith and what Powell called Feith's 'Gestapo' office -- had established what amounted to a separate government," the Post writes.

"The vice president, for his part, believed Powell was mainly concerned with his own popularity and told friends at a dinner he hosted a year ago celebrating the outcome of the war that Powell was a problem and 'always had major reservations about what we were trying to do."'

Woodward now? I guess I've got to get the damn book.

What is not ringing true here? What's going on (the song rings in the head with "Something's happening here" behind it on a second track). STOP!

Did Woodward stumble upon his lost soul? Or are we just living on another planet, reality is lost...............

My head is spinning this time, I feel faint.

9. It really looked as if he'd lost it, for two or three YEARS.
He was appearing on cable tv news shows as the world's greatest admirer of the pResident.

I had already written him off as a total whore, but maybe he needed to seem to worship Bush in order to get the story.

I really hope that was the case. This is a very perplexing developement for Woodward.

Don't blame you for questioning this new developement. Nooop.

5. I think they will close ranks and play nice now
I can't really figure out Woodward's angle. Maybe the powers that be (CIA?) have decided Bush has to go.

6. Daleo, I'm thinikng the exact same thing...
people thought I was nuts when I used to quote "Secret Agenda" what seems like decades ago - it was a book about the exposure of Watergate and 'indicted' Dean, Woodward, Dean's wife (former prostitute) and others in a scheme to remove Nixon so that we could have a different crowd enter the scene. It pointed out Woodward's employment history, and how he was directed to expose the inner workings of the WH. Fascinating stuff.

Who's crazy now?

8. I've been thinking this for a while
(That the CIA will do what it can to put this administration out of office.)

The CIA can't be too happy with the Valerie Plame case and the constant blaming of its intelligence among other things. I'm not the least bit surprised if agents are letting little items leak to certain reporters.

--------------

I am now fascinated by Woodward: was that 'puff piece' offered to the WH early on a ruse to gain the confidence of the Bush WH; all so Woody could write THIS book ??? ..

I hated to think that Woodward turned so completely from his own type ...

Perhaps Im being too nice to ole Bobby ...

11. I haven't seen anything
particularly damning in this book, at least nothing that hasn't come out already.

Bush was planning from early on to invade Iraq. We knew that. The administration was split. We knew that.

I think Rove leaked this "the White House is nervous about this book" drivel to innoculate themselves.

I think Clarke and O'Neill's books were far more destructive to the administration. At least from what excerpts I've seen.
