Major News Corp. investor calls for Brooks to quit

By Agence France-Presse
Thursday, July 14th, 2011 -- 8:12 pm

LONDON — Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a major shareholder in Rupert Murdoch's scandal-hit News Corp. organisation, on Thursday said under-fire executive Rebekah Brooks "had to go".

"For sure she has to go, you bet she has to go," News Corp.'s second largest shareholder said of Brooks on BBC's Newsnight programme.

Brooks, who is due to face MPs next week over claims that the now defunct News of the World newspaper hacked phones while she was editor, is the chief executive of News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corp.

The phone-hacking scandal escalated on Thursday after the FBI announced it was to launch an investigation to find out if News Corp. titles hacked into the phones of US citizens.

4. But...if they let her go, she has every incentive to rat out the rest of them.
This is not the Bush DOJ which would have twisted her arm to accept a guilty plea and a reduced sentence in exchange for NOT naming names.

6. Why doesn't this schmuck of a prince put his money to good use
instead of contributing to the downfall of society. Or is he just another fuck-up with too much money? Lot of those around. Something about oil seems to screw people up. Doesn't matter if you inhale it or invest in it.

10. The question is not whether or when she will go, but how big a check
she will take with when she goes. Judging from the looks on her face and Murdoch's face in the picture I saw, she is very happy about the size of that check.

12. He probably doesn't like a woman running a part of his investment
He IS a member of the Royal Family, who dictate all social mores. And they all seem to be misogynists.

13. Or maybe her authorizing the taping of phone lines is destroying his investment...
While I agree with your premise, I think it's more to do with the bottom line and damage control.

She will be testifying and with that, the stock of news corp with drop that much further.

it now seems that any little bit of news continues to pull the rug out from under newscorp.

Which I'm completely fine with.
