Bush's UN move partly down to 'poodle' Blair, says British press

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's press gave Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) some credit for Washington's belated backing for a greater UN role in Iraq (news - web sites), but maintained he was still acting as US President George W. Bush's "poodle".

"Bush backs Blair on UN," said The Times after listening to the leaders' joint press conference on Friday.

"Blair wins concession in push for democracy," said The Daily Telegraph following Bush's backing of a UN blueprint outlining the road to the restoration of Iraqi sovereignty on June 30.

"What substance there was suggested that Blair's earlier 90-minute conference with the president may have had some usefulness in promoting the role of the UN," said the less-convinced Guardian.

1. I feel this is another error for Blair.
Signing up with Bush can be bad for your health and in more than one way.

2. At this point the desperados
will sign on to just about anything they think might save their own asses. Watch out for the magic disappearing ink.

3. Exactly. Like I would EVER trust these guys.
I don't think Bush is as desperate as we'd all like to believe. We are all eternal optimists: we feel that if a man has made a ton of serious mistakes, we like to think that he will see the error of his ways, come clean and decide to do the right thing. Especially since the man is still in charge, for God's sake.

Don't fall for it. If Bush says that the UN will take over peacekeeping forces, look for the fine print which says that they will "oversee civilian activities, crop planting, educational and hospitals and such". They didn't fork out $164 of our money and 600 lives just to give it up.

They will NEVER give up their prize.
