Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 08:36 AM by maddezmom
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A Palestinian suicide bomber exploded at the Erez crossing between Israel and Gaza Saturday afternoon, the army said. Three people were injured, according to Army Radio.

The army said it was unclear whether the explosion happened on the Israeli or Palestinian side of the crossing.

5. Of course not,
but does the response always have to be the same? More killing?

8. I didn't see any suggestion
How should Israel respond to this suicide attack? If it doesn't respond, it is seen as weak and gets more suicide attacks. If it does respond, it is seen as bullying and gets more suicide attacks.

9. The only way you can achieve peace in the ME
or anywhere else for that matter is either for one side to completely annihilate the other side, or for both sides to sit down and negotiate an agreement.

In the past, the US played the leadership role of being the mediator and forced both sides to come to the table. Now the US leadership has no interest in negotiated settlements. We have a leader for whom everything is black or white, all or nothing. Under these circumstances, Sharon has no incentive to negotiate for anything, he can do whatever he wants and get away with it.

So in the meantime the suicide bombings will continue, more people will die, Israel will retaliate, there will be another suicide bomber, Israel will retaliate, there will be another....

12. There are lots more than two sides
And the Palestinians seem both unwilling and unable to bring the terrorists to heel. So the TWO sides can't do anything really.

15. That's why in this situation
you need the leadership of the US to intervene and broker a fair agreement for all sides.

Of course, that will never happen as long as people keep making excuses for why it not possible to even try.

You would think humans would have reached a higher level of consciousness by now?

17. What is a fair agreement for al sides?
Hell, we can't even agree about that on DU and the discussions get, shall we say, animated.

Hamas chief killed in air strike

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3635755.stm

Saturday, 17 April, 2004

The head of the Hamas militant Islamic movement in Gaza, Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, has been killed in a targeted Israeli missile strike on his car.

Mr Rantissi's death came 26 days after the founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was killed in another "targeted killing" by the Israeli military .

Two other people in Mr Rantissi's car died and several passers-by were hurt.

<snip>

UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said: "The British government has made it repeatedly clear that so-called 'targeted assassinations' of this kind are unlawful, unjustified and counter-productive."

So how long now, until the next suicide bomber?

21. It looks like killing another Hamas leader
might not be going over so well in the arab world. I think the response this time may be a lot bigger than another suicide bomber.

Death set to ignite tinderbox in Iraq

http://www.sundayherald.com/41410

Iraq was last night poised on the edge of a full-scale religious uprising as the assassination of Hamas leader Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi fed oxygen to the tinderbox siege of the holy cities of Najaf and Falujah.

Hundreds of foreign fighters, including Palestinians, have already poured into Iraq, the new front line in the battle against the ?infidels?, making the peaceful resolution of the siege of the Shiite holy city of Najaf a near impossibility.

Just as crowds of Hamas supporters gathered outside Gaza City?s Shifa hospital vowing revenge after the killing, so too would the foreign fighters within the walls of Najaf stiffen their resolve against what will be seen as the latest attack on the Arab world.

Last night supporters of the wanted Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said talks with the US troops encircling the holy city of Najaf had collapsed and that an attack was imminent.

10. Here are some old ideas...
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

The words of Bush's "favorite philosopher".

14. The "occupation"
Is defined by many Palestinians as the existence of Israel. Sorry, but you can't settle things with folks like that in a peaceful way.

16. To protect their people now..
Israel has to seal off the palestinians completly from Israel proper and not allow any movement into the country.Which is unfortunate because the gaza economy and the west bank relies on jobs within Israel.

Some people will cry ``collective punishment`` but its more a safety issue.

Complete seperation with no passage into Israel is the way to go.

Finish the fence, withdraw from Gaza...and seal the borders shut.

Of course some kind of allowance should still be made for those seeking refuge from persecution within the palestinian areas , for example gay palestinians should continue to be afforded safe refuge within Israel as they are allowed now.
