Exxon: Ruptured Montana pipeline had carried tar sands crude
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Exxon Mobil said on Friday that a pipeline that failed two weeks ago, leaking oil into the Yellowstone River, routinely transported a heavier and more toxic form of crude than the company and federal regulators initially acknowledged.

The Silvertip pipeline carries so-called tar sands crude from Alberta, Canada, as do the U.S. pipelines of most major oil companies, Exxon spokeswoman Karen Matusic told Reuters.

Matusic said the tar sands crude was present along various segments of the pipeline but not at the spill site in Montana.

-------

Tar sands oil, a synthetic petroleum product derived from tar sands or bitumen, contains more toxic components than the sweet, or low sulfur, crude that Exxon and government regulators initially said flowed in the Silvertip.

2. Lovely. Sarah Palin's "Pipeline to Nowhere"* empties at the Yellowstone River
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 02:27 PM by leveymg
A gift to the Lower 48 that keeps on giving.

(* Palin won her spurs as a GOP Governoe by convincing the Alaska legislature to put up half a billion dollars to start the TransCanada LPG pipeline that leads south to Alberta, where relatively clean LPG is used to cook coal slurry out of the tar sands for shipment to China (Chinese own Husky Oil that has bought most of the Alberta field) and some of the filthy stuff gets piped further south to refineries in Ohio). See, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/08/30/579990/-Palins-$500-million-Pipeline-to-Nowhere

This was the pipeline network that T Boone Pickins was always tooting on the tube, encouraging even more public subsidies for Big Oil/Gas a couple years ago.

3. Oil companies don't make mistakes
It was Yellowstone Park's fault for being located next to their pipeline.

Las Vegas, next to NY/NY... and the Eiffel Tower and the Luxor Pyramid!

I fully agree!

5. Again, why are their statements ever reported without a disclaimer?
They give false statements every time, yet these statements are reported as fact without mention that they have always lied in the past and their statements cannot be taken at face value.

10. That depends.........
does it count if they come out and admit that they always lie in order to protect their bottom line?

Fracking, tar sands, drilling in the oceans...they just about have the environment (and those who depend on it) surrounded.

9. On NPR yesterday, I heard an Exxon apologist say Exxon is
"very very sorry" for the spill into the Yellowstone.

So I guess we can just all forget about it now.
